Zerodha Stock SIP: UX Redesign for First Time Investors
Weekend Hackathon #123 submission.
The challenge was to simplify Zerodha's Stock SIP creation screen for new investors who may not know what a SIP is. The judging focused on copy, terminology, and cognitive load.
My approach:
I treated this as a copywriting and simplification problem, not a restyling job. The original screen leans on broker language like instalments, instruments, and until cancelled, which blocks a beginner at the first line.
Key decisions:
Added a one line explainer of what a SIP is, right under the title
Reordered the flow so choosing stocks comes first, with popular starter picks to remove the empty state
Collapsed four separate dropdowns into a single readable sentence for the plan
Replaced scary commitment language with a plain reassurance line: no lock-in, pause or stop anytime
Kept Zerodha's Kite identity intact with clean white and Kite blue
I also fact checked the copy. Zerodha has no minimum SIP amount, but whole share rounding makes a fixed low figure like ₹100 misleading, so the benefit line reads "no minimum amount" instead.
Deliverable: one desktop screen, one fold, no annotations, as per the brief.
