THE RECORD THAT WASN'T KEPT
The source: a clay tablet from Mesopotamia, around 3100 BCE. An
administrative account of barley distribution — a receipt, pressed into
clay and sealed by whoever counted the grain.
Same tablet. Same clay, same cracks, same chipped corner, same light.
Nothing written on it.
The oldest surviving thing in this part of the collection isn't a poem or a
law or a king's name. It's a receipt. Somebody counted the barley, pressed
it into clay, rolled their seal across it, and the record outlived the
empire that asked for it.
I spend my working life asking one question about how people use new tools:
does this step leave anything behind? Most of the time the answer is no.
The decision happened, the work happened, and there's nothing you could
show anyone afterward.
This is what that looks like. Five thousand years from now, a perfectly
preserved blank.
