#Day 6/30 - UX Law: The Hawthorne Effect šŸ‘ļø
The Hawthorne Effect is a cognitive bias where people change their behavior simply because they know they're being observed.
This is why getting true UX feedback is so difficult. The act of watching a new user (or asking them about their experience) may alter what they actually do.
Real-world example: Podcasts šŸŽ™ļø
Podcasters behave completely differently when they know an audience is listening. During a live recording, they're more articulate, more engaging, more "on." They pause at better moments. They explain things more clearly. They're performing.
šŸ“ƒ Design & Research Tips
1. Don't make participants feel judged
Remind users that you're testing the product, not them. Creating a comfortable environment encourages more authentic behavior.
2. Build rapport before the session
Longer sessions and casual conversation help participants relax and forget they're being observed.
3. Avoid influencing participants
Don't praise, correct, or react to their actions during the study. Even subtle feedback can change how they behave.
