Someone commented on my previous ChristmasList post and raised two problems that I thought were worth addressing:
Duplicate gifts: Imagine two people buying the exact same present because neither knew someone else had already picked it. Their suggestion? A hidden “I’m getting this” reservation, so others know a gift has been claimed without revealing who bought it.
Budget problems: Someone always manages to spend way above the agreed gift limit. 😂
That feedback got me thinking about how to make ChristmasList NG more useful.
So, I've been working on improving the experience, including:
🎁 Secret Gift Reservations – A way to mark gifts as claimed without revealing the buyer's identity to the list owner or other visitors.
💰 Better Budget Planning – Making gift budgets part of the experience so people can keep spending within agreed limits.
🎅 Secret Santa Events – I've also added a Secret Santa event experience where organizers can create an event, set a gift budget and exchange date, share an invitation link, and allow participants to join with their gift preferences.
Here's a look at the updated Secret Santa event page.
I'm building ChristmasList around a simple idea: gift-giving should be exciting, not stressful.
And this is why I enjoy sharing the building process. Sometimes, the best product improvements come from someone pointing out a problem you hadn't considered.
What other problem have you experienced with Christmas wish lists or Secret Santa exchanges?
Halloween is the one night a year dark patterns are on theme.
Built two cancel screens for a concept photo app in code with Claude Code. Same plan, same customer about to leave. Which one keeps more of them, A or B?
The Freshworks example is a good one: if the real answer sits in line two, it probably should be the headline. The five second test is the one I'd apply to every SaaS hero.
