A common failure in public information systems is swinging between too little information and total information overload.

During my recent trip to Mumbai, I found myself appreciating the thoughtful design of the Dynamic Route Maps in the Mumbai Metro. It manages to strike a perfect balance between information density and cognitive load—creating a simple UX that doesn’t demand attention, but is ready exactly when the user needs it.
