Most small business websites don't have a traffic problem. They have a conversion problem. I see it every week: a business gets decent visits, but almost nobody enquires. Usually it's not one big mistake — it's five small ones stacking up.
1. Speed. If your homepage drags past 3 seconds on a phone, a chunk of visitors are gone before they ever see what you sell. Compress your images, drop the plugins you don't use, and test on a real phone, not just your laptop.
2. Too many choices. A page asking visitors to call, WhatsApp, fill a form, join a newsletter and follow you on Instagram is really asking them to do nothing. Pick ONE main action per page and make it impossible to miss.
3. Mobile as an afterthought. Most of your visitors are on phones, but most sites are still designed desktop-first. Check your buttons with your thumb, not your mouse — if the quote button is hard to reach, it's costing you.
4. No proof where it matters. People decide fast. Real past work, genuine reviews, your location and how quickly you reply belong near the top of the page, not buried on a contact page nobody opens.
5. A contact form that feels like homework. Name, what you need, one message box — that's enough for a first enquiry. Every extra field is another reason to leave.
Fix those five and the same traffic starts working a lot harder. We've built 300+ WordPress and Shopify sites for small businesses in the UK, UAE and US, and the pattern holds across almost every niche: the sites that convert are rarely the prettiest — they're the clearest and the fastest.
