The order confirmation page is the highest-intent moment in the entire funnel - the customer already paid, so abandonment risk drops to zero. Most Shopify stores load it with nothing but an order summary.
A post-purchase upsell shown there, before checkout closes, converts differently than a product-page or cart upsell because there's no more decision fatigue and no more payment friction - it's one click on card details already on file.
Two things decide whether it works. The offer has to be genuinely complementary to what they just bought, not just the highest-margin item in the catalog - a mismatched upsell reads as a bait-and-switch on a page that's supposed to feel like a receipt. And keep it to one offer, not a carousel - a confirmation page crowded with more selling undoes the trust the purchase just built.
The discipline that keeps this honest. If declining the upsell adds friction or a guilt-trip screen, it's a dark pattern, not a lever. Decline should be one click, same as accept.
