Reviewing an educational project I worked on a while ago, I realized something we often overlook when designing a website. We tend to assume everyone browses under the same conditions and has the same access opportunities, when the reality is much more diverse.
But what happens when we design for the imperfect internet?
To me, inclusion is also about that, not leaving out someone who is browsing with limited data, from an old phone, with a slow connection, or looking for important information under less-than-ideal conditions.
Let’s stop focusing for a moment on sophisticated visuals, flashy micro-interactions, heavy multimedia, background videos, or complex decorative elements that usually take up most of the conversation when we design. First, let's ensure the content is accessible and works well for those browsing in less favorable conditions.
I wrote a quick reflection on this topic, leaving it here in case you're interested in reading it.
