The problem - promotions move faster than the systems watching them.
I checked six Shopify stores running live promotions. Three had a silent stockout risk before the promotion even launched, not out of stock yet, but sitting at a runway that wouldn't survive the traffic bump about to hit. Product pages still read "in stock." Ad spend was still pointed at those exact SKUs. One store's urgency badge was even sitting on a variant with plenty of cover, while the actual constrained variant showed no warning at all.
None of these were poorly run brands. Two had full-time ops hires. The gap wasn't effort, it was resolution. Weekly inventory reviews can't catch a shift that happens hour to hour.
I build reorder and stock-monitoring systems for Shopify DTC brands specifically to close that gap, tracking velocity at the variant level, in real time, so a promo doesn't quietly sell out your bestseller while the dashboard still looks calm.
If you're running promos on a weekly inventory cadence, that's the exact risk sitting underneath it right now.
