I have recently started a new editing series called City Cards, where I design a deck of cards inspired by different cities across India. The first city I have chosen is Bombay.
I feel that Bombay is often not represented adequately. More often than not, people are presented with a rather stereotypical image of the city, whereas Bombay, in reality, is incredibly dynamic. I think people need to understand the emotions and experiences that come with living in this city from a much closer perspective.
Personally, I have always felt that Bombay deserves a more comprehensive representation. I mean, there is no shortage of aesthetic portrayals of Bombay that we come across on the internet, but very few capture what the city actually means to the people who call it home.
I also feel that Bombay is an incredibly unpredictable city. It is known as the City of Dreams, yet, at the same time, it is also called the City That Never Sleeps. There is something fascinating about these contrasting identities, and I think they are both essential to understanding what Bombay truly is. “Indian maximalism is a whole visual language — from vintage Bollywood posters to matchbox art and bazaar typography.”
