When 18th-century heritage meets 22nd-century innovation, my submission for the FLORA x The Met challenge reimagines The Met’s iconic Royal George cello, giving it a completely different purpose from the one it originally had.
In 2125, phones and digital systems have become an essential part of our lives, making communication faster and easier than ever. We can talk to anyone, anywhere, but somewhere along the way, something has started to disappear: the real sense of another person being there.
A voice has become a message coming through a screen, a facial expression has become an image, and emotions are sometimes reduced to a few words or an emoji. We communicate all the time, but we no longer truly share the same moment with the person we are talking to.
And this is where I started thinking about the cello.
In the past, the cello was a way to express feelings that were difficult to put into words. Its sound could carry sadness, joy, longing, and other human emotions.
But what if its purpose was reversed in the future?
Instead of being used to add another sound to the world, the cello becomes a device that silences the digital sounds around us.
When it is played, notifications, artificial voices, devices, and the constant noise of virtual communication gradually begin to disappear. As these sounds fade away, other things begin to return.
A person’s voice beside you.
Their breathing.
Their laughter.
Their footsteps.
The sounds of nature.
Even your own voice.
The silence is not an absence of sound. It is a space where we can regain our ability to notice and feel the presence of other people.
The cello, once a way of expressing human emotions, becomes in the future a way of removing what keeps us from feeling them.
It no longer plays to be heard. It plays so that we can hear again.
