About this service

Summary

I will help you design a website that is user-friendly and easy to use. And since I'm a practicing IDEO designer, I can help you apply design thinking that brings together a design that is desirable, technologically feasible, and economically viable.

Process

When it comes to website design, it's easy to focus solely on appearance instead of function. A website that is visually appealing can be a great way to attract visitors. But will it be easy enough to use and meet the right user needs beyond its appearance?

Rather than focusing on the most attractive website design, I prefer to help you in creating a better user experience. My goal is to design a website that is both visually appealing and meets your users' needs. We can start by pinpointing a particular area of the service, experience, or problem that you wish to solve.

STEP 1: Choose a piece of the service, experience, or problem you want to focus on.

Example: we want to increase the sales at our online gift shop.

STEP 2: Identify one emotion you want to evoke in your audience of focus.

Example: We want our visitors to feel satisfied when they find gifts for their loved ones at our online store.

STEP 3: Brainstorm other services, experiences, or solutions that evoke that emotion. Choose one to move forward with.

Example: Amazon.com is a wonderful place to find toys under $25. To start exploring, all you need to do is click a card.

STEP 4: Explore how that analogous service, experience, or solution evokes that emotion. Get specific.

Example: It's almost as though Amazon can read my mind with their banner that allows me to easily find toys under $25 on their homepage!

STEP 5: Fill in this statement: How might we make (our service, experience, or problem) more like (analogous service, experience, or solution)?

Example: How might we make our customers happy by making it easy for them to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones in a matter of seconds?

How might we make finding the right gifts more intuitive, like Amazon.com?

STEP 6: Use this statement as the framing for a second brainstorm to generate new ideas for your context.

Example: what if we use AI to achieve this goal?

We can then make these ideas tangible by creating prototypes in Figma. We will go through a few cycles of prototyping and testing before arriving at a solution. This is called iteration, and is a key part of the design thinking process. Refining our prototypes will bring us closer and closer to our finished product or service.

FAQs

  • What is design thinking?

Design thinking is a process for creative problem solving that centers on the needs of people. It starts with what is desirable from a human point of view, along with what is technologically feasible and economically viable.  With design thinking, the six phases—framing a question, gathering inspiration, generative ideas, making ideas tangible, testing to learn, and sharing the story—form an iterative approach that is adapted for each specific challenge.

  • What is the starting point for the design?

In the design thinking process, it’s critical to determine the question that you’re asking before jumping to potential solutions. Start with curiosity and a beginner’s mindset. As we work to define a problem, “Why?” questions can be helpful for uncovering a challenge or opportunity. A great question that led to the invention of the Polaroid Instant Camera in the 1940s was asked by the founder’s four-year-old daughter, who wondered, “Why do we have to wait for the picture?” Therefore, we will start our design journey together by framing good questions.

  • What are good questions?

Good question will inspire you and your team, and lead to stronger ideas that actually address the needs of your customers. They help you to learn more. “What if?” questions are effective for encouraging brainstorming, and “How?” questions are useful for narrowing in and implementing ideas. Later on, we will work together to fill in this statement about your product or service: “How might we make (our service, experience, or problem) more like (analogous service, experience, or solution)?”
