About this service

Summary

I have professional experience in designing as well as coding cross-divisional scalable design systems that are easy to maintain. Being expert on Figma variables+components as well as frontend component code, I'm able to boost your team's efficiency dramatically and save weeks (or even months) of your time ensuring the design and development collaboration is running smoothly from the day 1.

Process

Step 1: Introduction call We will discuss the needs of your project/feature and see if we are a good fit for each other The scope will be selected from the following steps, not all steps need to be included in all projects: Step 2: Define - UX Strategy: Alignment of business and user experience goals - User research: AI personas, user profiles, surveys, user testing of existing solutions, card sorting, user journey... - Competitor Analysis: understanding the market positioning and analysing existing alternatives of your product/feature. If user requirements have already been validated earlier, this step can be skipped. Step 3: Lo-Fi Wireframing
Wireframing is a Lo-Fi design method to define the high-level feature lows together with stakeholders using simple design elements. Drawing the requirements and discovering edge cases like this together is usually significantly faster than trying to capture all possible user flows in text only. Step 4: Hi-Fi Figma Design - Presentation(s) of Hi-Fi Figma Design flows to collect feedback from stakeholders in UI as well as UX. This usually takes couple of iterations. - Collect feedback from users before implementation (optional but recommended) - Handover of the design resources Step 5: PoC Code Prototyping If the project has open technical feasibility questions or several critical interactions such as 3D environments or animations, I'm also able to create simple interactive Proof-of-concept (PoC) prototypes on the fly. Note that this will usually take for me the same time as clickable Figma prototypes. For this reason I do not use Figma's prototyping interactions but build the critical interactions directly in code already so you can take it also to implementation. If you need also support on frontend development, I'm also able to provide help on the frontend implementation with a solid 10+ years of frontend dev experience. FAQs

  • Which tools do you use?

The largest design system that I worked with most recently at Hexagon was built with Figma, custom styled Material UI React Library and another framework that allowed using React components also on Desktop and Mobile. The system was scaled into 20+ teams within a year and used as a basis for Hexagon corporate wide design system for 20k+ Hexagon employees. Having experience also on other design libraries like IBM's Carbon Figma and Vue/Angular frontend frameworks I'm also flexible to adjust the tooling based on your needs. For component unit testing I'm also able to give guidance on tooling. The main goal is always to utilize the existing skills of your team as much as possible to ensure smooth handover.

What's included

  • Wireframes

Conceptual Lo-Fi design of main interaction flows and base layouts that will be used as a basis for Hi-Fi designs after stakeholder approval. This ensures that missing requirements can be captured early on and stakeholders can request changes before more costly Hi-Fi design phase.

  • Figma UI Kit

The UI Kit contains basic reusable visual styles, variables and components for easier maintenance in future that can be expanded into a design system. Updating UI Kit elements updates all instances at once freeing up a lot of time from manual design and allowing you to create multiple themes and styles for your designs as you grow.

  • Figma Screen UX Design Flows

Figma screen UX design flows include detailed step by step stages of each interaction and state that is an ideal deliverable for frontend developers. The designs can also include technical pointers to help frontend developers and tips for potential tools like npm UI libraries, form libraries etc. User experience is always customized specifically for your users, needs and general usability guidelines based on Human-Computer Interaction Design Principles.

  • Code prototyping (optional)

Upon request, more complex design interactions, such as 3D interactions or animations, can be prototyped directly in frontend code as Proof-of-Concept (PoC) to test the technical feasibility of the designs. If you need also help with final production frontend development, see my other service specific for frontend implementation.
