Summary

Knowledge management seems like a fuzzy thing. We can know it is important or maybe something seems a bit wrong with it, but how do we pin that down to actionable items? It isn't easy to accurately forecast the future direction of knowledge management when we do not have a detailed picture of the current state of knowledge.
The Current State Assessment clears up that fuzzy picture to gather data about what is and is not working, set a benchmark, and give a true picture of knowledge within the organization. buy-in
The goal of the Assessment is to serve as a base for defining the purpose of organizational knowledge and generating buy-in by acknowledging the specific benefits of a clear knowledge management strategy. It will also guide the creation of a roadmap and most important first steps in moving forward with a knowledge strategy.
Key Project Outcomes
Identify what is working, not working, and bottleneck areas in knowledge flow and capture
Pinpoint good practices for knowledge capture and sharing that can be built upon
Assess how technology is being used to enable or hinder knowledge sharing
Provide a benchmark for comparing the current knowledge state to other organizations
What is Expected from the Customer
An initial meeting to understand the organization's strategy and goals for knowledge.
All employees fill out the Employee Knowledge Survey (about 15-20 min)
Meetings or communication as needed to perform a Content Analysis, System Review, and final questions for the Benchmark.
Meeting with the system administrator or data employee to receive relevant system analytics (if available)
Attendance for the Current State Summary Session
**Live interviews with current employees can be helpful but not necessary
Scope
This project is for assessing the current state of knowledge within the organization. It will also identify a few starting points for change. It will not include future state goals, roadmaps, or specific recommendations and next steps. Those can be addressed in another project if desired.

An assessment is very dependent on the number of employees, complexity/number of systems, availability of system analytics, etc. Please contact me to discuss the needs of your organization.

  • Benchmark Knowledge Management Score

    This is a scoring rubric assessing the organization's knowledge maturity in 5 areas: People, Process, Content, Culture, and Technology. You will receive an overall score and then a breakdown of the score in each of the areas.

  • SWOT Analysis

    Details of the knowledge management strengths and weaknesses of the organization.

  • System Analytics Summary

    Summary of the available analytics from current systems and what they say about the state of knowledge in the organization.

  • Cost of Current State

    Summary of the negative impacts the current state of knowledge management is having on the organization.

  • Starting Points for Transformation

    Identify 3 starting points for change based on the greatest need or greatest potential.

  • Current State Summary Session

    1 hour session discussing the Current State summary and findings. I will take any questions on the deliverables or methods. This can include the entire team or just select participants.
