You do not need a backend engineer and an integrations specialist. You need one person who can do both and understands how they connect.
I build backend systems and wire up third-party APIs that actually hold up in production. Not just a happy path that works in a demo. Proper error handling, rate limit management, retry logic, and the kind of defensive code that does not page you at 2am.
Across my projects I have integrated Nylas for calendar automation, AWS Textract for document processing, DocuSeal for in-platform e-signatures, Postmark for transactional email, Mixpanel and GA4 for analytics, and WebSockets for real-time data feeds. I have also built custom backend automation layers that replaced fragile Zapier stacks with reliable in-house logic.
If your product depends on third-party services working correctly, and most products do, this is the kind of work that determines whether your system scales or breaks.

Deliverables
Third-party API integrated into your existing codebase with full error handling
Webhook setup and event handling where applicable
Background job processing for async tasks (document parsing, email delivery, data sync)
Rate limit management and retry logic built in from the start
API layer documented so your team knows exactly what each integration does and how to maintain it
Test coverage for critical integration paths
Environment setup for staging and production with separate API keys and configs
1 week post-launch support included

My process
Discovery. I review your existing codebase, understand what the integration needs to do, and identify any edge cases or constraints upfront. Better to find them now than after the build.
API audit. I go through the third-party documentation, assess rate limits, authentication requirements, and any known issues before writing a line of code.
Prototype. I build a working proof of concept you can test internally within the first week. This catches mismatches between what the API promises and what it actually delivers.
Production build. Full implementation with error handling, logging, retries, and proper separation between staging and production environments.
Testing. I write tests for the critical paths and simulate failure scenarios so you know what happens when the third-party service goes down or returns an unexpected response.
Handover. Documentation and a Loom walkthrough covering how the integration works, what to monitor, and how to handle common failure cases.
