Designed and developed key interfaces for Alison, one of the world's largest free online learning platforms. With over 50 million learners across 193 countries and 6,000+ accredited courses, Alison needed a mobile experience that matched the scale and ambition of their mission: making education accessible to everyone, everywhere.
The Challenge
Alison's platform serves an incredibly diverse user base, from students in rural Africa to professionals upskilling in Silicon Valley. The mobile app needed to handle:
A massive course library spanning 10+ categories (IT, Business, Health, Language, Engineering, and more)
Complex search, filtering, and tag-based navigation across thousands of courses
Certificate and diploma tracking for learners pursuing accredited credentials
Offline learning capabilities so users could study without internet access
Seamless onboarding that converts first-time visitors into active learners
My Role
I handled both the UI/UX design and full-stack development for the mobile application:
Design:
Designed the complete mobile interface including course discovery, category browsing, search with tag filtering, course detail pages, video player, progress tracking, certificate management, and user profiles
Created a clean, accessible design system that works across diverse demographics and literacy levels
Built interactive prototypes for user testing before development
Ensured WCAG accessibility standards throughout the interface
Development:
Built the mobile application with cross-platform architecture for iOS and Android
Integrated course content delivery with streaming video and offline download support
Implemented user authentication with social login (Google, Facebook, Apple, LinkedIn)
Built the search and filtering engine for 6,000+ courses with category, tag, and skill-based navigation
Integrated payment and subscription flows for premium features
Connected analytics tracking for learner engagement and course completion metrics
Key Features Delivered
Smart Course Discovery: Category-based browsing, skill tags, difficulty levels (Beginner to Advanced), and personalized recommendations
Offline Learning: Download courses for learning without internet, critical for users in areas with limited connectivity
Certificate & Diploma Tracking: Progress visualization, completion certificates, and CPD UK accredited diploma management
Multi-language Support: Interface supporting English and Spanish with architecture ready for additional languages
Accessibility First: WCAG-compliant design ensuring the platform is usable by learners with disabilities
Impact
The platform serves 50+ million learners globally, with 15+ million graduates and 12+ million app downloads. Course content is provided by world-leading institutions including Google, Stanford, MIT, IBM, Microsoft, and the University of Cambridge.
