ميدان التحرير

Malak El Ahwal

Egyptian Activist Artists have a long history of Political engagement, representing as part of the vanguard of the upcoming wave of social and political change. ‘Art of the Egyptian Revolution’ aims to explore the amalgamation between politics and digital media in the Egyptian Revolution. With the outbreak of the revolution, there was a contrast between the events happening amongst society and what was portrayed in the media. Protest art reflected a conversation that was happening in society through murals and graffiti art.
This project ties together concepts of time, space and cultural memory. The fragmented images of Tahrir square resembles the turbulence of the Revolution and its contemporary state, my aim is to create a time capsule that inspires a concept of solidity and temporality to moments of cultural upheaval. Tahrir Square represents a time of fleeting, thousands of individuals gathered and human life in a roundabout, in this project Tahrir Square acts as a crystallized act of recognition. Even though this project aims to celebrate the lingering effect of humanity on space and culture, but it also celebrates what is forgotten and accounts for what is censored. I aim to portray a distinct crossing of time and space, Tahrir square then and now, and depict the representations of street art that act as a substantiation of ‘humanitarian forces’ which were covered with concrete and deemed unsuitable.
