Metadata for 'Inkandescent', an Independent Publishing Company

Daniel Redford

The Project:
Update and refine the metadata for Inkandescent's back catalogue of novels, novellas, poetry collections, and stageplays - this came to around ten texts. The purpose of this was to increase the visibility of the texts on various online retailer platforms - Amazon, online bookstores, etc. This would, hopefully, lead to increased click-rates on the product pages which would, hopefully, lead to increased sales.
The Method:
The first step was reading all of the texts produced by the publishing company thoroughly, noting down any pertinent information that could be used in a sales/marketing capacity. For example, any common themes in the texts, any particular markets or demographics such a text would be best marketed towards, or even just the length of the text and the discipline within which it sits. For every text, a new list had to be produced.
Secondly, each list produced was then cross-referenced with the three main standards of book categorisation - BIC, BISAC, and THEMA. Given the fact that each of these three standards differs in how specific or generalised they are, and how each one classifies different themes in different ways, judgment calls had to be made as to the relevancy of the code to the theme with which the text adhered to.
Once decisions have been made as to which codes to assign to each text, the documents were triple-checked for any errors, submitted to the publishing company for approval before they updated the metadata on their end.
