That is until she has a fateful night that turns into more than a passing conversation with her boss, Jeffrey Samuel. Plot Outline:
Exposition: The novel opens with the introduction of Jeffrey Samuel, the strong and heartless CEO of a billion-dollar company, and Megan Dennis, his overworked and underpaid secretary. Megan Dennis is shy and insecure. Because of her past trauma, Megan struggles with her self-worth, while Jeffrey is preoccupied with his career and has vowed to avoid emotional relationships. At a distance, Megan admires Jeffrey, but she feels too small to have his interest. Alyssa, Jeffrey's manipulative ex-girlfriend, is attempting to reclaim her place in his life, while business rivals are posing a danger to Jeffrey's economic empire. Inciting Incident: After having a few drinks at the company's corporate gala, Megan finds herself in an unexpected predicament with Jeffrey. An initial brief meeting develops into a one-night stand. Jeffrey blows it off the next day, considering it as inconsequential, leaving Megan feeling embarrassed. But a few days later, Jeffrey receives tragic news: his dominating father is threatening to sell over the family firm to a rival unless Jeffrey settles down. Jeffrey must find a solution quickly. Rising Action: In an attempt to get Megan to pretend to be his wife for six months in exchange for financial security, Jeffrey makes a marriage contract proposal, desperate to find a solution to his family's and his company's difficulties. Though hesitant, Megan agrees since she sees it as a chance to break out from her boring life and at last take charge of something. Alyssa, Jeffrey's ex-girlfriend, returns to the picture as the contract marriage takes shape, aiming to ruin Megan and win back Jeffrey. At the same time, Victor, a vicious corporate adversary, prepares to take down Jeffrey’s enterprise. In her new position as Jeffrey's "wife," Megan must deal with her father's harshness and navigate the competitive world of high society events, among other difficulties. Even though Jeffrey seems frigid on the outside, Megan starts to feel something for him when she starts to see glimpses of his fragility. But Jeffrey doesn't show much emotion since he thinks that love weakens him. Megan makes little attempts to stand up for herself, but Alyssa and the business world consistently pull her down, making her feel insufficient once more. As the suspense builds, Megan starts to speak up. She begins to decide on commercial matters for Jeffrey and opposes Alyssa's plots. Megan gains confidence with every encounter. She starts to see that, not just in the corporate world but also in her relationship with Jeffrey, she is more powerful than she ever imagined. Climax: Jeffrey learns that Megan has been meeting with Victor, his business adversary, just as he is beginning to open emotionally. However, Megan is unaware of Victor's actual motivations. Megan and Jeffrey have a falling out after Jeffrey accuses her of betraying him. Heartbroken, Megan attempts to explain, but Jeffrey is too angry to hear her. Feeling defeated and manipulated, Megan walks away from him. Falling Action: Jeffrey's epiphany: When Jeffrey is alone and thinks back on the previous six months, he discovers that Megan was the only person who ever showed genuine concern for him despite his money and position. As he looks into the matter more, he discovers that Victor and Alyssa are planning to kill him and Megan. Now that she is independent, Megan starts to take charge of her life by getting a new job. She has changed from being the shy, unconfident lady she once was. Despite her lingering love for Jeffrey, she won't go back to him. Desperate to put things right, Jeffrey comes up with a scheme to eliminate Victor and Alyssa. He battles to win back Megan's trust by outing their machinations in public. When she most needs him, Jeffrey doesn't believe in her, so he apologizes and declares his love for her. Denouement:
A stronger and more self-assured Megan approaches Jeffrey. She makes it obvious that if they are to be together, it must be on equal terms. Jeffrey accepts and vows to treat her with dignity and unwavering loyalty. He is pardoned by Megan, and they make up. After the novel, Jeffrey and Megan have established a genuine relationship based on mutual trust and respect, free from power conflicts and contracts. After the bad guys are vanquished, Megan at last experiences the happiness and love she deserves.
