“Ask the guy on day shift” is a fragile but really common way to keep a business running. When a maintenance update says “checked it” or “waiting on parts,” the next person still has questions:
What was checked? What did you find? Which part are we waiting on? Who owns the next step?
A useful handoff should make those answers easy to find. Even a simple Excel tracker becomes more useful when it captures:
The equipment and reported issue. What was actually done. The current status and any restrictions. The next action, owner, and follow-up date.
That’s the work I focus on. Turning scattered notes, manuals, and maintenance knowledge into practical trackers, checklists, and SOPs people can use. My background is in manufacturing and U.S. Marine Corps electrical/mechanical maintenance. I care about whether the document makes sense to the person who has to pick it up and use it.
If your team has a spreadsheet or process that only one person understands, I can help make it easier to hand over. What’s the one detail you always wish the previous shift or previous project owner had written down?
