SMOOTH INK

Overview

"The Ship" is a genre-blending fiction piece that mixes wonder and horror, set aboard a vessel where the unknown lurks beneath every surface. Written as a spec piece to showcase my ability to work across tones and genres.

The Story

The last thing I remembered was stepping onto this ship. The weather was cold, clouds gathering. I opened my eyes with no memory of my past.
Focusing my vision, I realized I was nowhere near land — surrounded by deep blue water. My head filled with hows, whys, and whens every passing minute.
I started looking around for answers to questions I couldn't answer myself. Was I alone? Walking the ship in disbelief, I sat on the dock just to keep my mental state intact.
After calming down I continued this confusing journey, hoping for a way out. I went inside — and finally saw someone. Or so I thought.
The figure stood completely still, not moving a finger. Something felt wrong. I tried to leave but couldn't move. In a blink everything changed — thunder rumbling, lightning striking, lights flickering, the sea turning violent. Screams and cries filled my ears.
Then the figure started moving toward me. Step by step.
It was me. My own face staring back at me.
"How... how is that even possible?" I spoke for the first time on that ship.
Then my face began to open — slowly, like a blooming flower — revealing rows of teeth and flesh beneath. I screamed in terror and disgust.
And then — nothing. The ship, the sound, the sea, the second me — all gone. Only darkness remained, with a single speck of light.
I reached toward it.
My eyes opened slowly to blue sky. My mother knelt beside me, crying, thanking God.
"Mom... what happened?"
"Honey... you drowned."
I took a deep breath and smiled. At least I had escaped a living nightmare. My mother and the passersby stared at me like I was crazy.
And maybe I was.

My Process

I started with the setting (the ship itself) as both a physical space and a metaphor, then layered in character dynamics and escalating tension. Drafting and revisions happened in Google Docs, with notes captured on the go, and visual assets designed in Canva for presentation.

What This Demonstrates

Ability to blend genres (wonder and horror) seamlessly
Strong atmospheric and setting-driven storytelling
Pacing that builds tension while maintaining reader engagement
Versatility as a writer who can shift tone within a single piece
This is a spec/concept piece written to demonstrate creative range.
