Bluefin Studio is a digital design studio based in Santa Monica, run by two friends who left agency life to build the kind of studio they always wanted to work with. They create websites, brand identities, and AI front desk systems for small businesses, solopreneurs, and ventures.
They needed a website that reflected their ethos: craft still matters, and modern tools let small teams do remarkable work. The site had to showcase a growing portfolio of client work across industries (luxury construction, pet care, cannabis, interior design, art galleries) while feeling intimate and intentional.
The Challenge
Bluefin's brief had a few specific technical requirements that pushed beyond a standard Webflow build:
Automatic dark/light mode that responds to the user's system preferences, with smooth transitions between the two.
Rich, scroll-driven animations that feel polished without hurting load times.
A portfolio structure flexible enough to present very different client industries (from luxury construction to dog training) under one cohesive visual system.
Performance at scale with heavy imagery and interactive elements across every section.
The Solution
I built the entire site in Webflow, working closely with Bluefin's design direction to translate their vision into a fast, responsive, production-ready build.
Dark/Light Mode Implementation: Built a system-aware theme toggle that detects the user's OS preference and applies the correct palette on load. The transition between modes is seamless, with no flash of unstyled content.
Animation & Interaction Design: Developed smooth scroll-based animations and hover interactions throughout the site. The portfolio section uses engaging transitions that reveal project details without requiring page reloads, keeping the browsing experience fluid.
Responsive Architecture: Every section adapts cleanly across desktop, tablet, and mobile. The portfolio grid, service listings, and contact sections all reflow naturally without losing the design's intentionality.
Performance Optimization: Despite the animation-heavy design, the site loads fast. Clean Webflow structure, optimized asset delivery, and efficient interaction code keep the experience snappy across devices.
Key Features
System-aware automatic dark/light mode with smooth transitions
Scroll-driven animations and interactive hover states throughout
Fully responsive layout optimized for all breakpoints
AI-powered "Digital Front Desk" concierge integration

The Result
The finished site gives Bluefin a digital home that matches the quality of work they do for their clients. It's fast, visually distinctive, and flexible enough to grow as they take on new projects. The dark/light mode and animation work in particular set it apart from typical studio sites, reinforcing Bluefin's positioning as a studio where craft and modern tooling go hand in hand.
