Context

I was asked to develop designs for two products: a deck of cards and a frisbee. Both the deck of cards and the frisbees would be given out in gift boxes for low-income children in the camp community that during a non-COVID summer would be financially sponsored to come to camp. My colleagues and I planned the contents of the boxes, packaged all the boxes and delivered all the boxes - by the end of the summer 275 boxes were delivered to campers in need. As well, an additional 150 decks of cards were ordered to be sold at the not-for-profit camp store throughout the year (all proceeds are put back into running the camp and sponsoring more campers).

Brainstorming

I started this process by brainstorming key themes that fulfilled 3 key goals
1) Reflect the company's brand
2) Appeal to the customers receiving the product
3) Work well on the requested product (frisbee and deck of cards)

Sketches

I collaborated with a colleague to create preliminary sketches for the deck of the card logo. After valuable insight from my colleague, I worked on the frisbee logo independently.
Guided by my previous brainstorming - we used sketches to plan the designs visually.
Sketching increased the ease of communication between my supervisor and me and therefore sped up the project's progress.
As we sketched - we identified key design themes and were able to eliminate ideas that did not translate well visually.

The Final Frisbee Design

For this design, I incorporated, the logo, the name of the company and the establishment date to solidify the presence of the company in the product. I used the forest green because it is the company's colour and I kept it monochromatic to ensure uniformity. The alternating sized circle of starts reflects the playful nature of the product and gives homage to a classic camp game 'star spinning. The design works in tandem with the product because as the frisbee spins, the stars spin.

The Final Deck of Cards Design

For the deck of cards, I decided on a stamp-like design that would look classic on the cards. Since both adults and children would be using this product, I kept it simple. Like the frisbee design, I used the company's name, logo, and colour to solidify the brand. The 'Home Is Where The Hart Is' is a retro camp staff saying which would appeal to the alumni who would make up a large proportion of consumers. Note: The camp is on Hart Lake which is why Hart is seemingly spelled incorrectly.

Final Frisbee Product

The white background and forest green logo work together really well making this succinct design stand out.

Final Deck of Cards Product

I wish I could have chosen the background of the cards to make them look more unique but the retro stamp style looks classic.

Reflection

This project has inspired me to explore more of the technique behind logo design. Since the project, I have completed a Logo Design course on LinkedIn learning and I am on a journey of refining my skills on Adobe Illustrator. I am so proud of how the products turned out but I am more excited about how I can grow for my next projects.
