Gender inequality

Chukwunonso Okoli

Gender inequality refers to the unequal treatment experienced by different genders. It is rooted in discrimination against women and girls on the basis of their gender and runs through many areas of life. It affects access to rights and services, opportunities, pay and promotion, and even attitudes and beliefs.
Gender inequality is an ongoing problem in many countries across the globe. In some places, it is considered culturally acceptable for men to have more rights and privileges than women, while in other places there is explicit discrimination such as not allowing women to own land or take part in decision-making processes. In many countries, women are denied equal access to education and healthcare, and face gender-based violence, including domestic and sexual abuse.
It is essential that the key drivers of gender inequality are identified and addressed in order to ensure the promotion of gender equality. This can mean tackling attitudes and beliefs that perceive different genders as unequal, breaking down the traditional gender roles and stereotypes, promoting female empowerment and getting more girls into school and other education opportunities. It can also mean taking action against gender-based violence, and tackling laws and policies that create an unequal playing field between men and women.
