Her family was Japanese American and was forced into internment camps by the U.S. government during WWII. She later attended the progressive Black Mountain College, founded by Josef Albers. Around the same time, Asawa learned her most well-known wire sculpture technique from basket makers in Mexico. She went on to found an innovative public school art program and public arts high school in San Francisco, and served on the California Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts.
