Title: Automatic Proximity Reactions – Motion Design Experiment
Overview
This animation is an experimental motion design study focused on creating automatic proximity reactions inside After Effects.
The idea was to make different text elements respond to each other’s distance — almost like they have awareness of space.
As objects come closer, the typography shifts, bends, reacts, and changes intensity in real time.
Concept
The main goal was to explore how text can behave not just as static lettering, but as living elements that respond to energy, direction, and movement.
I wanted the viewer to feel like the words are sensing and reacting to the environment around them.
Technical Approach
To build this effect, I used a mix of:
Proximity-based expressions (distance calculations)
Text animators
Glow and blur effects
Light and shadow play
Smooth easing and interpolation
Minimal color palette for a focused mood
The animation is structured around cause-and-effect:
when one element moves, the others shift automatically.
This creates a chain reaction that feels dynamic but still controlled.
Process
I started by laying out the main text structure, then built a system where each line responds when another layer comes close.
The reactions include:
 Subtle distortions
 Intensity shifts
 Automatic reflections
 Ripple-like movement
 Soft glow changes
Everything is designed to be self-triggered, without needing manual keyframes for each reaction.
Visual Style
The dark background and spotlight atmosphere help the viewer focus entirely on the motion.
Text reflections and radial gradients add depth and give the feeling of being inside a quiet, abstract space — like a room of mirrors.
Goal of the Study
My goal was to learn how to build procedural animation systems, where motion doesn’t rely only on keyframes but on logic and interactions.
This project helped me understand:
How to connect layers using expressions
How to build reactive animation behavior
How to make effects automated instead of manual
Conclusion
This experiment was a step toward creating smarter motion graphics that feel alive and responsive.
I want to continue exploring more automatic systems, generative design, and text-driven interactions.
