The Great Mosaic Dome: Transforming Ancient Islamic Geometry into Contemporary Architecture
Overview: For the #Flora Museum Challenge on Contra, I have reimagined the iconic Star- and Hexagonal-Tile Panel from the historical Islamic art collection of The Met Museum. The original artifact showcases a flat, repetitive tiling system meant for flat surfaces. My project expands this historical visual DNA into a monumental, three-dimensional contemporary scale—turning an ancient decorative panel into a massive architectural landmark.
My Creative Process & Vision:
The Transformation: I took the exact geometric rhythm, interlocking stars, and hexagonal layouts of the original tiles and wrapped them seamlessly across a giant hemispherical dome.
Color & Craft: The design carefully preserves the deep cobalt blues, vibrant turquoise glazes, and intricate floral relief work of the original artifact, enhanced by realistic structural joints.
Museum-Worthy Presentation: The presentation board highlights the complete evolution—from the flat museum reference panel to the final structural environment, complete with a contemporary pavilion entrance and water reflection plaza.
