Summer 2023 is right around the corner, and everyone is opting for shorter hairstyles this year. So you know what that means? It means we are officially in bob length season. Whether you are rocking your own natural hair or reaching for one of your favorite bob cut wigs, this is the summer to look stylish and be cool at the same time.
If you live in a hot and humid weather climate, this hair style comes in handy for looking cute while being cool, literally. I live in Georgia, and it is already hot and humid here. The girls here already have their peaches out, and their hair is protected in braids or wigs.
Even with my locs, I am searching on Amazon for a cute wig to wear this summer, because I want to be cute and comfortable. Now that my locs are past my shoulders, I want to start doing protective styles to extend my retwists to 8 weeks. That being said, I found some cute options for myself, and wanted to share them with you.
But just in case you haven’t heard of the term “bob”, let’s quickly explore what it is and what to look for when searching for your next short bob wig.

What is a Bob Hairstyle?

A Bob hairstyle is when your hair is neck or shoulder length. Most of them are tapered to your jaw line or brushes against your shoulders. Besides the long, luxurious hair, a bob is one of the most loved and favorite hairstyles on women, especially on a black and brown woman.
The Bob haircut has always been around, especially when the infamous Hair Stylist Vidal Sassoon brought the style back in the 1960s. Even though I believe black women were wearing this style way before the 60s.
But no Bob is alike. There are different types of bobs you can receive, depending on the look you are going for. If you have naturally curly hair that’s type 2 or type 3, you can have a curly bob. Or you can buy a curly bob wig to change up your look.
There is also a symmetrical bob, also known as the blunt cut bob, when the hair is all one length across the jawline or shoulders. Or you can have an asymmetrical bob when one side is longer or shorter than the other. This can come in the form of a short pixie cut bob, or past as your shoulders.
You can also jazz up your bob with side bangs with a side part, curtain bangs with a middle part, or Chinese bangs that brush right against your forehead or eyebrows. That’s the fun part about a bob haircut. You can customize it anyway you want to show off your personality and personal style.
Let’s dive into some of the popular bob haircuts to see which one fits your style and face shape the best.

Different Types of Bob Hairstyles/Haircuts

Blunt Bob (Symmetrical Bob)

A blunt cut bob is when all of the hair is one length that normally stops at the jawline, neck, or shoulders. It is one of the sexiest bobs out there. Why? Because a blunt, symmetrical bob brings subtle drama to the face, when done right. You can have this cut done with a middle part or side part, and it will look amazing with your face.
It can compliment almost any face shape, depending on the length. If you have a short neck, bring the bob up to your jawline, which will show off some of your neck line. If you have a longer neck, bring the bob’s length to your shoulder, which could hide some of your neck line.

Asymmetrical Bob

The asymmetrical bob is where one side of the bob is longer or shorter than the other. You can have it as subtle or dramatic as you please. When I was a hairstylist, I’d done plenty of asymmetrical bobs when one client wanted one side of her bob shaved, and the rest of the hair graduated to the length of the other side.
There was also a client who wanted her right side to start right to the length of her ear lobe, and the rest graduated to the left side of her shoulder. For this style, a side part with side bangs is great.

Layered Bob

A layered bob is when the bob has different layers cut into it that give it texture and movement. All of the hair is not cut into one length. This style adds volume to the bob, without the flat, one length look. The layers can be very subtle, which can give the look of removing some of the weight (heaviness) from the bob. Or it can be dramatic, that gives the most volume and movement.

Stacked Bob (Inverted Bob)

A stacked bob has other names, such as inverted bob and often layered bob. But when I think of a stacked bob, I think about a bob being jaw or neck length, where it’s short in the back and longer in the front. I can remember this bob being very popular in the 2010’s when celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson in the movie Think Like A Man.
Almost everyone wanted this cut, because it was sassy and filled with drama. When you had this cut, you looked sophisticated, stylish, and boujee.

Lob Bob

The lob or long bob has been around forever. But it hasn’t adopted a name in the black community. I learned this term in cosmetology school. It’s just a regular bob that is extended to your shoulders or brushes against the top of your back.
Everyone in high school had this hairstyle, who was growing out their bobs from the previous year. This is the style where you instantly thought you had some hang time because it touched your shoulders, which was a big flex at the time of the 2000s – 2010s.
