Illustration for Galactic Hegemon Board Game

Galactic Hegemon is a published deck-building board game created for Mythic Visions LLC. I was contracted to create 104 character busts, 9 backgrounds, 36 effect illustrations, and 8 faction symbols, delivered as PSD and PNG files for print production. Working from the initial brief through final files, I created artwork that was printed and manufactured for the finished game, now available through The Game Crafter.

The client was seeking a simple and cartoony style with bright colors and thick outlines for a space opera board game. Each illustration had to be bold, have a strong silhouette, and match with the style of the already existing ship and weapons designs. I also had to work within the constraints of pre-determined dimensions for printing purposes.

Each faction had its own mood and aesthetic that needed to be conveyed in a few simple images. Backgrounds like the one pictured above work to illustrate the culture of each race and faction. In this image the complex golden dome window works to show the opulent and religious nature of the Terrapin Unity, one of the eight factions of the game.

One of my biggest challenges in this project was working in a style so different from my usual illustrations. This style leaned into being simplified and organic. The lines were allowed to wobble, the shadows could be strong and unblended, and the colors were encouraged to be bold. The result was a game that looked over-the-top, fun, and recognizable.

Galactic Hegemon was published in March of 2021 featuring my work on faction and effect cards.
