Sexual health and wellness are integral parts of overall well-being, and women, in particular, play a vital role in ensuring their sexual health. But it’s hard, right? How can we stay informed and receive helpful information with so much misinformation and so many new restrictions and laws surrounding our bodies?
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on informed decision-making, empowering women to take charge of their sexual health. The Guttmacher Institute said it best: “When women and their partners have access and information about contraceptives, there is evidence that it leads to positive health, social, and economic outcomes.”1 Not only is an informed approach more proactive, enhances physical health, and contributes significantly to emotional and psychological well-being, but it can also encourage good law and policy-making – which women everywhere need.
There is still so much stigma around having conversations about sexual wellness, resulting in the policing of women’s bodies more often than the encouragement of proper care. It's time to bring these conversations to light and give them the space they deserve. This article will focus on what sexual health means, how to make informed decisions about your sexual health, and provide some tips on preventing health risks.

Understanding Sexual Health

Sexual health encompasses a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being concerning one's sexuality. For women, it involves so much more than “just sex.”
It's about understanding things like:
their reproductive system,
safe sex practices, and
embracing their sexual identity without fear or stigma.
Contraceptives
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Informed decision-making in sexual health means having access to accurate information about contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and various contraceptive methods available.4

Empowerment Through Informed Decision-Making

Informed decision-making in sexual health empowers women to make choices aligned with their values, preferences, and health needs. Access to comprehensive, unbiased information enables women to navigate through complex decisions, such as choosing the right contraceptive method, understanding the risks and benefits, and determining their sexual partners.
Informed decisions lead to increased confidence, better communication with partners, and greater control over one's body.

Breaking Societal Taboos

One of the essential aspects of sexual health for women is breaking societal taboos and promoting open conversations. In many cultures, discussing sexual health is still considered taboo. However, informed decision-making thrives in an environment where discussions about sexual health are encouraged, normalized, and respected.
When women openly discuss their concerns and questions, they can make decisions based on knowledge rather than myths or misconceptions. Sometimes, this can simply mean conversing with your friends – I’m lucky enough that my best friend is a pharmacist, so I tend to go to her for advice on medical-related things first. While I understand that most women may not have that luxury, conversing with friends about your health and well-being can be enlightening. You may learn that you’re not alone in your experiences, and you may encourage your friends to have conversations with their partners they didn’t know they needed to have.
Breaking societal taboos can be as beneficial to men as it can be to women – but it will likely have a larger impact on the female population in this instance.2

Enhancing Relationships

Healthy sexual relationships are built on trust, communication, and mutual respect. Informed decision-making fosters open dialogue between partners, allowing them to discuss preferences, boundaries, and concerns openly.
When both partners are well-informed, they can engage in sexual activities that are consensual, safe, and mutually satisfying. This communication strengthens the emotional bond between partners and enhances overall relationship satisfaction.

Preventing Health Risks

Informed decision-making also plays a pivotal role in preventing and managing health risks. Understanding the importance of regular check-ups, screenings for STIs, and vaccinations can significantly reduce the risk of infections and other health complications.
Knowledge about the signs and symptoms of various health conditions ensures early detection and prompt medical intervention, leading to better outcomes for women's sexual and reproductive health.3

Women’s Sexual Health Is Important For Us All

The importance of sexual health and wellness for women cannot be overstated. Informed decision-making empowers women to embrace their sexuality, make choices aligned with their values, and prioritize their well-being.
By promoting open conversations, breaking societal taboos, enhancing relationships, and preventing health risks, informed decision-making becomes the cornerstone of women's sexual health.
As society progresses, it is crucial to provide women with the resources, education, and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health, ultimately leading to healthier, happier lives for women everywhere.
