Superfoods are those foods that are incredibly good for you and offer minimal calories as well. Of course, with all of the skepticism these days about the latest “miracle foods,” it would be easy to think that “superfoods” would fall into that category as well. However, they are the real deal. Here are four reasons why you should consider giving superfoods a shot.

Improved Eyesight

Superfoods will improve your eyesight. Examples of this would include spinach, salmon, carrots, blueberries and sweet potatoes. Spinach is loaded with nutrients such as Vitamin A, Lutein and Zeaxanthin. These nutrients can protect the cornea, shield the eyes from ultraviolet light and help with vision development. Getting more nutrient-rich foods into your diet will help combat the effects of aging on your eyesight.

Improved Dental Health

Superfoods will help improve your dental health. For example, chewing raw carrots has a similar effect to brushing your teeth. However, it’s not just carrots. Yogurt provides probiotics that encourage healthy gums. Fatty fish options such as salmon, trout, mackerel and eel provide Vitamin D, which is good for preventing dry mouth that eventually makes dental problems. Also, onions contain many antibacterial properties for improved dental health.

A Stronger Immune System

Superfoods really go to bat for your immune system as well. They include a lot of great components for an immune boost, including folate, Vitamin C, polyphenols, coumarin (good for white blood cells), friendly bacteria from yogurt, elderberries and foods that are rich in zinc. Interestingly enough, another superfood that offers great immune system potential is salmon. Have you ever wondered why this fish has such a unique pink color? It’s because it contains astaxanthin, which is a component that is highly regarded for improved cell functioning.

Lower Blood Pressure

Some of these superfoods contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which not only improves the skin and nails, but it also can get your blood pressure back up to speed. Although it’s difficult to find foods that naturally include this nutrient, there are many superfood condiments that have it. These would include hemp oil, borage oil from the bee plant and some species of blue-green algae.
As you can see, the key to a longer life with fewer health problems just might be considering some of these superfoods. Do your research in this area and incorporate these foods into your diet. It can really pay off for you in the end, but remember- always consult your doctor or health care provider about your diet adn any supplements you take!
