This was a small manual written for the PlantIN app, where writers (with botanical knowledge) create a step-by-step care guide. I had multiple freelance projects with this client. Hello,
Thanks a lot for reaching out with your plant question. We are happy to help! Our expert has analyzed your photos and provided recommendations to help your calathea orbifolia.
Brown leaf edges are usually a sign of either a watering problem or the build-up of mineral salts in the soil or both. You've mentioned that you are watered according to schedule, but please take into account the watering depends on climate and the place of plants. It's best to make the watering habit of checking the soil. Follow these recommendations to keep your plant healthy:
When you water, be sure to always water thoroughly enough so that some water trickles through the drain holes. If your tap water is hard, then use filtered or distilled. If you are fertilizing, stop. If you want to check water, stick your finger in the soil and if few inches are dru, water again.
Prune off any leaves that are starting to turn pale or have a lot of brown edges. For leaves with lesser brown edges, those edges can be trimmed off while maintaining the original contour of the leaf.
Extreme temperature changes caused by hot spots or cold drafts can also cause browning leaves in your Calathea.
You can cause hot spots by placing your Calathea too close to a heater, radiator, or window. Ideally, Calatheas prefer temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 27°C). A temperature higher than that will cause your plant’s leaves to wither and shrivel.
We hope our advice will help you take proper care of your plants. Follow this guide to be the best plant parent. Also, we’d love to assist you with any other plant issues.
All the best,
PlantIn
