The Fiction Must Go On Exhibition

‘The Fiction Must Go On’ is a collaborative exhibition between two personas — built around a shared interest in vibrant color and visual language.
The exhibition brings together Superlemonbeam, a brand that expresses humor and wit, and Mikael You, an artist who treats color as a space for continuous experimentation. Each persona is articulated through distinct yet overlapping approaches, constructing a shared fictional world between them.
Through ongoing conversations around music, film, drawing, and everyday experiences, the two developed a series of imagined departures — at times playful and absurd, at times quiet and cinematic. The exhibition presents these exchanges as spatial and visual outcomes, driven by a shared impulse to escape boredom — the fiction must go on.
Walking through the neighborhood, a floating jar appears behind the window of a black brick building, acting as an entry point into the exhibition’s fictional world. The object takes the form of a modular lemonade jar airplane, constructed from yellow acrylic and EVA foam. A manual lemon squeezer is repurposed as a motor, while the structure integrates with Mikael’s hand-drawn clouds. Dripping juice leaves a trail of yellow droplets below, extending the object into its surroundings.
From inside, the large window frames the surrounding neighborhood — turning reality into a shifting backdrop, a canvas that coexists with the fictional scene.
The main exhibition area began with Mikael’s interest in the conditions in which his artworks are experienced. As both an illustrator and musician, he sought to create an environment where his music could be heard under optimal conditions while viewing the work. This led to the use of egg-crate panels, typically intended for acoustic insulation, recontextualized as frames.
During the process, traces of flowing lemon juice — initially accidental — became embedded within the material language, embodying a refined form of kitsch pursued by both artists. These frames function not only as display structures, but as narrative elements that connect object, sound, and mood.
