Slider Optimization for Gamer Platform

Platform for gamers. And gamers... well, they like to play. I know, haha.
So picture this: a slider where you pick desired wins, and the price updates live. Do you think they’ll move it once and leave? No. They’ll slide it back and forth like it’s a game, before they even think about buying. And every tick can trigger an API call. They could burn my server before they ever reach checkout.
A simple developer will say: “just add a rate limiter bro.”
Good idea, but I don’t want to hurt my server to the point where it rejects requests and shows messy errors to a customer who is about to pay me.
Another one will say: “use a rate limiter at the reverse proxy level.”
Also a good idea, but I don’t want my users to see an nginx error at this stage either.
So what’s the solution? Debounce. The request goes to the server only after the user stops sliding. In my test, 37 slider ticks became 1 API call.
But then, what about the effect dependencies? I don’t want my effect firing over and over when the user touches other parts of the page. So the dependencies must trigger the effect only when something relevant changes: a primitive like the slider id, not a whole object.
So is there an optimal solution? In software engineering, there’s always a better one. Here, it’s the combination:
Debounce + good dependency choice + a rate limiter at the reverse proxy level.
Debounce and dependencies keep normal traffic low, so real users never come close to the limit. The rate limiter stays as a safety net against abuse, with generous limits and a quiet 429 handled in the UI.
One more thing: debounce lives in the browser, so it’s not security. Anyone with a script can bypass it. And whatever price the slider shows, the backend must always recompute it at checkout.
Result: the backend receives what the user actually wants, not every move they make while playing with the slider.
