Framer Case Study — Allium Retro-Futuristic Concept for Lil Big Things
A Retro-Tech Experiment Built for a Global Web Powerhouse
Allium is a bold, retro-futuristic website concept crafted by GG Studio for Lil Big Things, a global studio known for delivering high-impact websites around the world.
In just 7 days, our senior design team created a pixel-perfect Figma layout inspired by Game Boy and Retrotech aesthetics — a visual direction that is nostalgic, playful and highly curated, yet still precise enough to be used as a real production blueprint.
The result is a concept that doesn’t just reference retro design: it feels like a modern interface built on top of classic handheld gaming culture.
Overview
Lil Big Things approached us with a clear ambition: explore a concept that was “totally out of the box”, visually daring and technically sound — something that could both surprise their clients and serve as a benchmark for future experimental work.
Instead of a generic modern SaaS look, they wanted:
A Game Boy / Retrotech-inspired interface that was still clean and usable.
A strict alignment with demanding visual references they had curated internally.
A production-ready Figma file with a full design system, not just pretty mockups.
Allium became the playground where we combined retro nostalgia, modern design systems and advanced Figma techniques into one cohesive experience.
Creative Challenge & Goals
From the start, we aligned with Lil Big Things on three core goals:
Honor the retro references without sacrificing UX
The interface needed to capture a Game Boy-like mood — chunky pixels, limited palettes, subtle noise — while still behaving like a modern, responsive product.
Translate strict visual references into a coherent system
The client brought “exigent” references: specific screens, textures and moods. Our mission was to synthesize these into a consistent, reusable design language.
Deliver a build-ready Figma file in 7 days
Not a moodboard or a one-off hero, but a complete design system with responsive components and interaction-ready states.
Our Approach
To reach a high level of craft in a very short time frame, we structured the work into three main phases:
Visual Language & System Foundation
We studied the client’s references and classic handheld UIs (like Game Boy and other Retrotech devices).
Defined a core visual language: color palette, typography, grid, icon style, and interaction cues that would feel cohesive across the whole experience.
Key Screens & Component Exploration
Started with the hero and core layouts to establish the main “wow” moments.
Built and tested modular components (cards, navigation, CTAs, content blocks) under the retro-futuristic theme, validating usability and hierarchy.
Design System & Technical Polish in Figma
Converted the visual exploration into a fully structured design system: styles, components, variants and responsive rules.
Applied advanced Figma techniques to ensure the system was not only beautiful, but highly efficient for future use.
All of this was done in under a week — without the need for any revision cycle after the final presentation.
What We Built in Figma
The Allium concept goes far beyond a static mockup. The deliverable for Lil Big Things included:
Complete Design System
Color tokens tuned for retro contrast and accessibility.
Type scales that balance “pixel feel” with modern readability.
Spacing, grid and elevation rules that are easy to apply across pages.
Responsive-Ready Components
Navigation bars, cards, content sections and UI modules built with resize and breakpoint behavior in mind.
Variants for different states (hover, active, disabled) that respect the retro direction while supporting modern interactions.
Advanced Offset Shadows & Depth Effects
We implemented dynamic offset shadows that create a 3D, “pressed button” effect reminiscent of classic game interfaces.
These shadows were systematized so developers can reproduce them consistently — not manually, one by one.
Pixel-Perfect Detail Work
Every alignment, spacing and radius was meticulously checked to create a pixel-perfect result.
Micro-decisions (corners, borders, dithering-inspired textures) were carefully tuned to keep the layout clean, not cluttered.
Handoff-Ready File for Top Creators
The Figma file was organized for teams who operate at a high level: clear naming, logical layers, and documentation embedded in the structure.
This enables Top Framer Creators and senior devs to translate the design directly into production with minimal friction.
Results & Impact
Although Allium is a conceptual project, its impact for Lil Big Things is very concrete:
