THE JOURNEY TO RETURN is

THE JOURNEY TO RETURN is essentially a coming-of-age story - a journey back home by someone who has spent years longing for it. A personal tale about maturity, happiness, melancholy, and that strange feeling of finding your way back to something you thought you'd lost.

The film started, as most of my projects do, with a little procrastination.

I was browsing the The Met, came across John White Alexander's Repose, and immediately started wondering about the girl - Who is she? Where is she? Is she asleep? Dreaming? Is she happy? Where does she live?

Then The Waterfall paved the way for the visual journey, and suddenly I had my hook.

From there, I collected the artworks and artifacts, sketched the first storyboard on paper, worked out the camera movements, transitions and character dynamics, and then built the complete storyboard with GPT.

After a LOT of testing - photoreal, animation, stop-motion - I finally landed on an organic, painterly animation language. That felt right for this story.

Then came the actual production: character sheets, object references, shot lists, Seedance, Veo, Nano Banana, Flora, After Effects and Premiere.

The biggest lesson? AI video production is very much a one-man army job. You become the director, AD, cinematographer, VFX artist, editor, sound designer and sometimes even the person arguing with yourself about the budget.

And with a limited budget, planning becomes everything.

I used Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.5 as my main weapons of creation, with Seedance doing most of the heavy lifting. I tested cheaply first - if a shot worked at lower resolution and shorter duration, then I pushed it further.

I also deliberately chose a stylized painterly look because it gave me a little room to cheat - especially at lower resolutions.

Once the shots were locked, it was time for the final layer: custom animated paint textures, film grain, compositing in After Effects, and the final edit and sound mix in Premiere.

And that's pretty much the journey.
