After — a warm, renter-friendly balcony retreat designed for evening atmosphere.
Before-to-after transformation: from an empty city balcony to a cozy evening retreat.

Overview

This balcony refresh was created for Kate's Workroom as a budget-friendly concept for a small city balcony. The goal was to show how an empty outdoor space can become a warm, functional evening retreat without renovation or expensive furniture.

The Challenge

Before — a clean balcony shell with a city view, but no warmth, function, or emotional atmosphere yet.
Before — a clean balcony shell with a city view, but no warmth, function, or emotional atmosphere yet.
The original balcony had good bones: neutral tile, clean walls, a glass railing, and a city view. But it felt empty, cold, and unfinished. There was no comfortable seating zone, no atmosphere, no softness, and no reason to spend time there.

The Goal

The goal was to make the balcony feel inviting, cozy, and practical while keeping the city view open. The concept needed to stay renter-friendly, budget-conscious, and easy to recreate with accessible items.

Design Direction

The direction was warm, moody, and layered: black accents for structure, soft ivory curtains for movement, natural woven textures for warmth, deep green plants for life, and warm lighting to create an evening glow.

What Changed

White sheer curtains softened the hard edges and kept the balcony airy.
Warm string lights and battery wall lights created evening atmosphere without electrical work.
Two lounge chairs and a small coffee table made the balcony usable.
A hanging chair added a second cozy spot.
Jute rugs and woven textures made the space feel warmer.
Plants and a custom botanical artwork created a focal wall.
The city view stayed open and became part of the mood.
Final visual direction — layered lighting, soft curtains, woven texture, plants, and cozy seating.

Custom Artwork Gift

Custom printable artwork created to match the balcony palette, mood, and focal wall.

As part of the Kate's Workroom signature approach, one custom printable artwork was created for the room story. For this balcony, the artwork uses dark botanical leaves on a warm neutral background, matching the black accents, greenery, and evening mood of the space.

Budget / Shopping Direction

The estimated shopping budget to recreate this balcony look is around €470 / under €500. This includes the main visible styling items: sheer curtains, ties, string lights, battery wall lights, lounge chairs, cushion covers, coffee table, balcony bar shelf with stools, hanging chair, jute rugs, plants, planters, lantern, small decor, and printing/framing for the artwork. The artwork design itself is included as a gift and is not part of the shopping cost.
