Overview 🔎
Under the brand name Soph & Art is a watercolor artist having as main theme: animals.
As part of the development of a cover for her Facebook page, the idea wasn’t simply to add a picture but a media highlighting various realizations that she was able to produce. A media rather than a picture attracts more attention, gives a more lively aspect to the environment in witch it is inserted and professionalize more.
The project was therefore based on a series of watercolors mixing animals, people, environments… Both in a drawing state and in a completed state, in order to exhibit both his skills and a wide range of his achievements. This production was made in motion design from stock elements with the theme of painting: allowing the appearance of works through stains; in a 3D workspace offering the possibility of setting up “continuous” transitions between the revelation of watercolors and drawings.
Process 🛣
In order to realize this project, I went through several well-defined stages.
- Realization of the scenarios (Editing and Motion design) in order to clarify the direction of the project and to know all the elements to be produced.
- Creation and configuration of the composition within After Effects: dimensions of the production (2950x1090 px), choice of the number of frames per second (60 FPS), duration not defined (depending on the composition), and configuration of the camera.
- Elaboration of the various plans and their insertion in the 3D workspace. Retouching and cutting of the watercolors and drawings.
- Refining of the transitions between each plan.
- Editing of the production: camera path, Intro & Outro and black thumbnail.
- Editing of the production on Premiere Pro: Addition of the soundtrack chosen by the client.
- Production export (H.264): 1 video file (.Mp4); 2 cover pictures (JPG & PNG).

🎞 Composition
Dimensions: 2950x1090 px.
Frames per second: 30 Fps.
Duration: 1 minute 24 seconds.
Editing: 3D editing with a shot by 2-nodes camera.
The chosen format is quite unconventional since it corresponds to very specific dimensions: those of the cover of a Facebook page.
✂ Cutouts & Retouching
- Each of the watercolors and each of the drawings.
The drawings have been the subject of a colorimetric retouching in order to increase the contrast between the pencil strokes and the paper, as well as to further whiten this paper. The watercolors also took advantage of this in order to make the colors slightly more distinctive.
Also, a resizing was necessary on all the works in order to put them back perfectly vertically or horizontally and then so that they don’t seem too far away when we look at them. Cutouts were sometimes necessary in this operation.

Takeaways 📣
This project was the first “concrete project” made for a client. The composition wasn’t easy to produce but the elaboration of all the elements was clear in my head. For this reason, the only problematic I faced was to know how to shape them, by what means and tools.
Following its completion, I was able to deepen my use of After Effect and reinforce my skills in designing compositions in a 3D workspace and in Motion design.
