Case Study: Groomie Pet Grooming & Care Template

01 THE PROBLEM

What a typical grooming salon's website looks like — and why it's costing them clients

Your website is often the first thing a pet owner sees. If it doesn't build trust immediately, they close the tab and call someone else."

Think about the last time you searched for a service business online. You opened three or four tabs, and within seconds you made a judgment — this one looks professional, that one looks outdated, this one I'm not sure about. Pet owners do exactly the same thing when looking for a grooming salon for their dog or cat.
The difference is that for a grooming salon, trust is not just a nice-to-have. A pet owner is handing over an animal they love. They are not just evaluating whether your prices are competitive — they are asking, unconsciously: does this business look like the kind of place that will treat my pet with care?
And yet, the vast majority of pet grooming businesses in 2025 still operate with one of three web presences: a generic booking-platform page, a dated DIY site built on a template from 2018, or no dedicated website at all. None of these communicate the care, expertise, and warmth that a quality grooming salon actually delivers.
That is the problem Groomie was built to solve.

02 WHO IS THIS FOR?

This case study is written for two audiences, and I want to be upfront about that from the start.
If you run a pet grooming salon and you've been putting off getting a proper website because it felt too expensive, too complicated, or too time-consuming — this is for you. Groomie was built with your business in mind, and by the end of this case study you'll understand exactly what it does, why it was designed the way it was, and how it can be customised for your salon in days.
If you're a designer or developer who works in Framer and you're looking to understand the depth of thinking and craft that goes into premium template work — this is also for you. The process behind Groomie is the same process I bring to every custom client project.

 03 THE GAP I FOUND

What months of market research revealed about the grooming template niche
Before designing a single element, I spent time doing what most template creators skip: proper competitive research. I found, downloaded, and analysed every grooming-related template available on the Framer Marketplace. There were six of them at the time. Here is what I found.

1. Typography Gap

Every template used a clean geometric sans-serif — Inter, Satoshi, Jakarta Sans. Only one attempted a serif, and it read as a luxury women's salon rather than a pet care business. The entire editorial serif space — warm, expressive, and confident without being feminine or cold — was completely unclaimed.

2. Colour Gap

The palette landscape was easy to map: forest green (Groomify), amber-peach (Groomix), bright yellow (GroomLab), pastel pink-blue (Pawsy), muted mauve-sage (Groomerly). Terracotta — warm, rich, the colour of animal fur in warm light — was present in none of them. It became the obvious choice.

3. Layout Gap

Every single template used a centred, symmetrical, card-heavy layout. The standard service website format. None applied editorial layout principles — strong typographic hierarchy, asymmetric compositions, intentional whitespace, oversized typographic moments. This was the largest creative opportunity in the niche.

4. Feature & Content Gap

No template had micro-animations on cards. None had an animated scroll-progress timeline. None included complete legal pages. None had a post-form Thank You page. And none shipped with professionally written, ready-to-use content across all sections. Most offered placeholder text and left the rest to the buyer.

04 THE DESIGN DECISIONS

"Every design decision in Groomie was made in response to something specific — not a preference, but a gap."

1. Typography — Inter Display + DM Sans

After evaluating eight different font pairings — exploring everything from traditional serifs like Lora to expressive sans-serifs like Cabinet Grotesk — I landed on Inter Display paired with DM Sans. Both are free on Google Fonts.
Inter Display is a meticulously crafted, modern sans-serif purpose-built for larger text scales. It carries a sharp, editorial confidence and structural precision, but avoids the cold, clinical rigidity of older grotesques. With its tighter natural tracking and refined proportions, it creates the crisp, authoritative typographic moments that give Groomie its striking visual identity. At large display sizes, it feels commanding and premium; at H2 sizes, it remains perfectly composed and impactful.
DM Sans handles everything else — navigation, body copy, buttons, labels, forms, and footer. Its subtle humanist warmth makes it feel much more approachable than using standard Inter for paragraph text (a route taken by two competitor templates) without veering into the playful territory of rounded display fonts. The subtle interplay between these two typefaces — Inter Display’s crisp, structural authority and DM Sans’s clean, inviting readability — is what creates the modern, polished tension that defines the template's feel throughout.
Both fonts are available free at fonts.google.com — no licensing cost for buyers.

2. Colour — Terracotta on Warm Cream

The founding principle of the Groomie palette was warmth without softness. The five free competitor templates either used clinical whites with bold accents, or pastel tones that felt generic and childlike. Groomie needed to feel premium and editorial without coldness, and warm without being soft.
A gentle grooming moment where a dog is being cared for in a calm, pet-friendly environment.
A gentle grooming moment where a dog is being cared for in a calm, pet-friendly environment.
Warm Cream #F9F5EF
The decision to use warm cream as the page background instead of pure white is arguably the single most impactful visual choice in the entire template. It creates an analogue, editorial quality — like a well-designed print piece — and separates Groomie from every competitor at a glance. All six competitor templates use white or near-white bases.
Terracotta #C4622D
Terracotta was chosen because it was completely absent from the competitive landscape and because it carries exactly the right emotional associations for pet care: warmth, craft, expertise, and approachability. It is also visually harmonious with the warm tones of animal fur — golden retrievers, cream-coloured dogs, tabby cats — making the colour palette feel coherent with the photography, not imposed on it.
Deep Charcoal #1C1C1A
Pure black was deliberately avoided. Deep charcoal has a warm undertone that maintains the palette's warmth-without-softness principle while providing strong contrast against the cream base. It is used for all primary text, the navbar, button backgrounds, and the footer.

3. Photography — Nano Banana and Lummi AI Rendering

All photography in Groomie was generated using Nano Banana and Lummi AI, an image generation tools optimised for photographic realism. This was a deliberate choice over stock photography for a specific reason: consistency.
Stock photography of pet grooming is inconsistent in colour temperature, lighting style, and composition. Mixing sources from Unsplash and Pexels — even carefully selected ones — creates a visual incoherence that undermines the premium feel of an editorial template. AI-rendered images allowed full control over warmth, tone, and subject matter across every single image: hero, about, services, add-ons, process steps, testimonial avatars, gallery, contact, and 404. Each image was directed to match the warm cream and terracotta palette system.
The result is a photography system that feels like it was commissioned for the template — because effectively, it was.

4. The Editorial Layout Principle

The most important thing to understand about editorial layout is that it is not about font category — it is about compositional discipline. Strong typographic hierarchy. Intentional whitespace. Confident restraint. Asymmetric grids. Letting typography carry sections rather than filling every corner with decorative elements.
In practice, this means the hero heading in Groomie is genuinely large — large enough to make an immediate visual statement. Section labels are small, all-caps, terracotta, understated but precise. Step numbers in the Process section are rendered at 80–96px in Fraunces Light — large enough to create editorial texture without competing with the content they label. Price figures in the packages section are treated as editorial moments, not transactional tables.
On the Framer Marketplace preview thumbnail, this approach makes Groomie immediately, unmistakably different from every other grooming template. That differentiation is not accidental — it is the core strategic proposition of the template.

7 Pages, All Designed and Built

One distinction worth making explicit: Groomie's 7 pages are all designed and built — not just listed in the navigation as empty placeholders. This matters because several competitor templates include page links in their footer without actually building those pages.
Landing Page 11 sections covering the complete customer journey from discovery to booked appointment. The primary commercial page of the template and the most content-intensive.
404 — Not Found Custom branded error page. Copy: "This page went for a walk." A curious dog illustration. Navigation back to home. Most templates skip this entirely — it matters for brand cohesion.
Thank You Pag Post-form-submission confirmation. Sets expectations, warms the client relationship, and completes the post-conversion experience. No competitor template includes this page.
Salon Policy 12-section complete policy covering cancellations, late arrivals, pet health requirements, de-matting fees, payment terms, liability, and emergency procedures. Ready to publish without modification.
Privacy Policy 10-section policy covering data collection, usage, sharing, security, user rights, cookies reference, third-party links, and children's privacy. Professionally written, not template-legal boilerplate.
Cookies Policy 7-section policy covering cookie types, usage, third-party cookies, management instructions, and consent. The only grooming template on the marketplace with a dedicated cookies page.
Legal Hub All three legal pages linked from the footer with clean navigation. No broken links, no blank pages, no placeholders.

FEATURES NO OTHER GROOMING TEMPLATE HAS

The specific things that make Groomie different — and why they matter

A calm and professional pet grooming session focused on comfort and care.
A calm and professional pet grooming session focused on comfort and care.
Animated Scroll Timeline The Process section's vertical timeline animates as visitors scroll — a technically sophisticated interaction that signals premium quality immediately. None of the six competitor templates have anything close to this.
Card Micro-Animations Subtle, polished hover animations on the service and add-on cards. Consistent with the editorial design philosophy — purposeful, not decorative. Small interactions that significantly elevate perceived quality.
AI-Rendered Photography All images generated through Nano Banana and Lummi AI with consistent direction: warm light, earth tones, subjects that complement the terracotta and cream palette. Visual coherence that stock photography cannot match.
Complete Legal Page Suite Three fully written legal pages totalling thousands of words. Not placeholder text — actual, ready-to-publish salon policy, privacy policy, and cookies policy. A real grooming business can publish this template and operate it legally without hiring a lawyer to write these pages.
Thank You Page The post-booking confirmation experience. Reinforces the brand, sets expectations, and makes the business feel professional at every touchpoint — not just the homepage.
Full Booking Form Name, email, phone, pet age, service selection dropdown, pet type and breed, message. A genuinely functional booking form, not a placeholder contact field.
Professionally Written Copy Every word across every section was written specifically for this template — service descriptions, package inclusions, FAQ answers, testimonials, and all three legal documents. Buyers can publish without writing a single word.
Editorial Layout (First) The application of editorial design principles to a pet grooming template is unique in this niche. Compositional discipline, typographic hierarchy, and intentional restraint that makes the template stand apart on the marketplace preview before a buyer even clicks through.

THE CONTENT STRATEGY

Why writing came before design — and what that produced

A template is only as good as the content it is built around. Groomie was built around real research backed content."

The most unusual aspect of the Groomie production process was the sequence. Rather than designing the template and filling it with placeholder text afterward — the standard approach — the entire written content was developed and finalised before a single Framer component was built.
This meant the layout was designed to fit real copy, with real proportions, real hierarchy, and real information architecture. Service card descriptions that are actually the right length. Package inclusions that actually itemise correctly. FAQ answers that actually answer real questions pet owners ask. A hero headline that actually carries editorial weight at display size.
The Research Behind the Writing
The content was developed after analysing all five reference templates in detail — extracting their written content, mapping the sections that were common across the niche, and identifying both where the language patterns worked and where they fell flat. The grooming industry has two common content failure modes: clinical language that feels cold and corporate, and cutesy language that undermines trust. Groomie's tone was calibrated to sit precisely between them — warm, confident, and caring without being patronising or unprofessional.
The Legal Content
The three legal pages were written from scratch specifically for a pet grooming business context. The Salon Policy alone covers twelve topics that matter to a real salon owner: how bookings work, what happens with late cancellations, what health requirements pets must meet, how matted coats are handled, what the payment terms are, what to do in a medical emergency, and how liability is managed. A salon owner who purchases Groomie and customises it for their business does not need to go find a lawyer to write these pages — the foundation is already there.

What You Get
A professional, fully designed website that communicates trust and warmth from the first scroll — the kind of first impression that converts a visitor into a booked appointment.
A complete services and pricing structure you can update to match your own offerings — services, packages, and add-ons are all clearly organised and easy to modify in Framer without writing code.
A booking form that captures everything you need: the client's name, pet details, breed, age, and which service they are interested in. All submissions go to a custom Thank You page that confirms their enquiry professionally.
A gallery section to showcase your best work — the transformations and happy pets that speak louder than any marketing copy.
An animated "How It Works" timeline that walks first-time clients through your process, reducing hesitation and building confidence before they even contact you.
Complete legal pages — salon policy, privacy policy, and cookies policy — that are ready to publish and protect your business professionally.
A mobile-responsive layout that works on every device. Most pet owners will find you on their phone — Groomie looks and functions correctly across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
What Customisation Looks Like
Groomie is built in Framer, which means customising it requires no coding knowledge. Replacing the content with your own business details, adjusting the colours to match your brand, swapping in your own photos, and updating the pricing takes hours — not weeks. If you would rather have a professional handle the customisation for you, that is a service I offer directly. Your salon's website can be live and looking like this within days.

The process, the thinking, and what working together looks like

If you are a Framer designer or developer, the Groomie case study demonstrates a specific approach to template design — one that begins with market research and content strategy rather than visual exploration, and that treats every decision as answerable to a specific question: what gap does this fill?

My Process on Every Project

1. Research Before Design
Every project begins with a thorough analysis of the competitive context — existing templates, competitor websites, visual patterns in the niche. Understanding what already exists makes differentiation specific rather than arbitrary.
2. Content Before Layout
Written content is developed before Framer is opened. This produces layouts with correct proportions, authentic hierarchy, and sections that fit real information rather than placeholder estimates.
3. Design System Before Components
Typography guidelines, colour systems, spacing rules, and interaction principles are documented before building begins. This prevents inconsistency and makes the build faster and cleaner.
4. Photography as Design, Not Decoration
Images are directed to serve the design system — matching the palette, the editorial tone, and the section-specific requirements — rather than selected from a stock library and hoped to fit.
5. Complete, Not Approximate
Every page is built. Every section has real content. Every interaction is implemented. No placeholders, no blank pages, no "to be updated." What ships is what the buyer experiences from day one.
