EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD - ERIE, PA - 1997 - DAY

SUPER: “1997”

The sun is shining and the sky is clear. The street is lined with trees and close-knit houses. Most houses don’t have fences. One such house has a blue door.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - DAY

YOUNG ZAC CONLON (12) and YOUNG ANNA ANGELILI (12) sit on a couch and play N64 Mario Kart. Zac raises up his arm in victory.

YOUNG ZAC

Beat ya’ again!

Anna pouts and throws down her controller.

YOUNG ANNA

Aww man. I suck at this game.

YOUNG ZAC

You have to stay on the track.

Anna throws a throw pillow at him and Zac catches it, laughing.

YOUNG ZAC

Do you want to go get ice cream?

YOUNG ANNA

Sure, Zac.

TEENAGE PATRICK CONLON (15) stomps down the stairs and runs into the living room. He grabs the back of the couch and leans over into the middle schoolers’ faces.

TEENAGE PATRICK

Did someone say ice cream?

Zac shoves him away.

YOUNG ZAC

You’re not coming.

Patrick whines.

TEENAGE PATRICK

But I love ice cream, too, Zac.

YOUNG ZAC

No brothers allowed.

Patrick looks at Anna.

TEENAGE PATRICK

Anna wants me to come.

YOUNG ANNA

You’re a dweeb.

YOUNG ZAC

Leave her alone, Patrick.

Patrick looks between them.

TEENAGE PATRICK

You two like each other!

Heat rushes to Anna’s and Zac’s cheeks. Patrick points at them.

TEENAGE PATRICK

It’s true! You do!

Patrick grabs Zac’s face and squishes it.

TEENAGE PATRICK

(singing loudly and terribly)

I’ll be your dream, I’ll be your wish, I’ll be your fantasy. I’ll be your hope, I’ll be your love, be everything that you need.

YOUNG ANNA

Eww, that song is terrible.

TEENAGE PATRICK

What! It’s the greatest love song ever written.

Patrick plants a big ol’ kiss on Zac’s forehead. Zac bolts off the couch and lunges at Patrick. The wrestle. Anna shakes her head.

YOUNG ANNA

Get him, Zac!

Zac finally punches Patrick in the balls and stands up.

YOUNG ZAC

Come on, Anna, let’s go.

Anna jumps off the couch and joins Zac. Zac opens the front door and they walk out. Patrick gingerly follows them. Zac rolls his eyes.

YOUNG ZAC

Fine.

EXT. ICE CREAM STAND - DAY

The three kids stand in front of the ice cream stand trying to decide which flavors to try. Patrick gets his ice cream first.

YOUNG ZAC

I think I’m just gonna get my usual.

ICE CREAM STAND MAN hands Zac his ice cream and Zac steps to the side. Anna steps up.

YOUNG ANNA

Raspberry cream, please.

ICE CREAM STAND MAN

That’ll be $1.40.

Anna reaches into her pocket and pulls out some change.

YOUNG ANNA

Rats, I’m 10 cents short.

She’s about to walk away when Patrick presses a dime to the counter.

YOUNG ANNA

You don’t have to do that, Patrick. I don’t need ice cream today.

TEENAGE PATRICK

It’s 10 cents, Anna. No big deal.

Anna gets her ice cream and the three walk down the sidewalk.

EXT. TOWN SIDEWALK - MOMENTS LATER

Patrick trips over a crack in the sidewalk.

YOUNG ZAC

You’re such a dweeb.

Patrick steadies himself.

TEENAGE PATRICK

Just wait until puberty hits, dude.

Zac glares at him.

YOUNG ZAC

You know what would be super cool? If there was a bar where you could go as an adult and play video games all day. Like a video game bar!

YOUNG ANNA

That would be really cool.

YOUNG ZAC

Maybe you’d actually get good at playing Mario Kart.

Zac laughs and Anna punches his arm.

YOUNG ANNA

We should totally open a bar like that someday.

INT. ANGELILI HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - DAY

Anna sits by herself and plays Legend of Zelda. A THUMPING comes from behind her.

Anna whips around and sees her dad, MR. ANGELILI (mid 30s) tripping down the stairs and clutching his chest.

MR. ANGELILI

Anna, get your mom. I need help.

Anna drops her controller and goes to Mr. Angelili.

YOUNG ANNA

Dad? Are you okay?

(shouting)

Mom!

MRS. ANGELILI (mid 30s) rushes into the room and goes to her husband.

MRS. ANGELILI

I’m going to call 911.

Anna runs out of the house.

EXT. CONLON HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER

Anna knocks frantically on the door. MRS. CONLON (late 30s) opens the door. She sees the wild look on Anna’s face.

MRS. CONLON

Anna, what’s wrong?

YOUNG ANNA

Something’s wrong with my dad. There’s an ambulance coming.

Mrs. Conlon looks next door to the Angelili House. She ushers Anna inside.

MRS. CONLON

Stay with the boys. I’m going to help your mom.

Mrs. Conlon hurries past Anna.

INT. CONLON HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER

Zac appears by the door. Anna comes in.

YOUNG ZAC

What’s going on?

YOUNG ANNA

I’m supposed to stay here. My dad is going the hospital.

Zac touches Anna’s arm.

YOUNG ZAC

Do you wanna like play a game until they’re back?

Anna looks at the floor.

YOUNG ZAC

I’m sure everything will be okay. I’ll even let you win a race or two.

They walk into the living room.

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

There are a crowd of mourners in black gathered around a plot. Mrs. Angelili and Anna stand at the front of the crowd, nearest to the plot. Mrs. Angelili dabs at her eyes.

Zac stands beside Anna and takes her hand in his. She looks at their hands wildly.

YOUNG ZAC

I’m here for you.

Anna squeezes his hand back and gives a weak smile.

PREACHER

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life and commemorate the passing of devoted husband and father, Dominic Angelili.

Anna starts to cry and Zac squeezes her hand harder.

After the service, the mourners shuffle around and talk. YOUNG BECCA (12) walks up to Anna and Zac. She gives Anna a giant hug.

YOUNG BECCA

Oh bestie, I’m so sorry.

Becca lets go of Anna.

YOUNG BECCA

We should have a sleepover soon.

She looks at Zac who is still holding Anna’s hand.

YOUNG BECCA

Girls only.

YOUNG ANNA

Yeah, that’d be cool.

Off to the side, Patrick and a GIRL are making googly eyes and kissing faces at each other near a tree. The three middle schoolers watch.

YOUNG ZAC

That’s his new girlfriend.

YOUNG ANNA

What’s her name?

YOUNG ZAC

I don’t remember.

YOUNG BECCA

Wasn’t he dating someone else last week?

YOUNG ZAC

Yeah, seems like he’s got a new girlfriend every week.

Patrick catches them staring and walks over to the trio with his girl in tow. He trips on a tree root a little but rights himself quickly.

TEENAGE PATRICK

Anna, I’m so sorry. If there’s anything we can do, you know we’re just next door. All of us.

YOUNG ANNA

Yeah, Patrick, thanks. I appreciate it.

Patrick squeezes Anna tight. His girlfriend looks annoyed.

GIRL

This isn’t what I thought you meant by date.

Patrick rolls his eyes.

TEENAGE PATRICK

Yeah, come on. Let’s get out of here. Bye Anna.

Patrick and his girlfriend walk away.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - EVENING

Mrs. Angelili and Mrs. Conlon sit across from each other. Zac and Anna sit next to each other. Patrick sits across from them. MR. CONLON (late 30s) sits at one end of the table. The other end is empty.

The only sound is the chewing of food. No one knows what to say. Mrs. Angelili holds back tears. Anna looks forlornly to the empty seat.

INT. ANNA AND ZAC’S APARTMENT, BEDROOM - PRESENT DAY - DAY

Anna and Zac, now 23, lay cuddled in bed.

SUPER: “PRESENT DAY - 2009”

Zac has his arms wrapped around Anna’s naked body, but they’re under the covers. He flips her around so they stare into each other’s eyes. This must be love.

ZAC

I’m just saying, Rainbow Road is the worst Mario Kart track.

ANNA

Zac!

She playfully smacks him and they laugh.

ANNA

You can’t just hate on me like that.

ZAC

I could never hate you!

They kiss.

ZAC

I’ll still kick your butt in the game, though.

Anna reaches to smack him again but Zac rolls away. He sits up and pulls on his boxers.

ZAC

Better get moving, slowpoke. Don’t want to be late for Sunday night dinner.

Anna tosses a pillow at him.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - DAY

Mr. Conlon (early 50s) and Mrs. Conlon (50), Mrs. Angelili (late 40s), Anna, Zac, and Patrick (now 26) sit around the table and talk.

They pass dishes of food back and forth.

PATRICK

How’s the video game bar coming?

ZAC

Good.

ANNA

We were just scouting some locations this weekend.

MR. CONLON

How are you going to fund it?

ZAC

We’ll get a loan.

MR. CONLON

Don’t you have enough student debt?

ZAC

Yeah, but this is important to us. Plus, Penn State Behrend wasn’t that expensive.

MR. CONLON

Perhaps wait a few years and explore other options.

MRS. CONLON

Get stable. Get married!

Zac chokes on his food. Anna’s eyes go wide.

ANNA

We haven’t really talked about that, Mrs. Conlon.

Zac continues to choke. Anna pounds his back.

MRS. ANGELILI

You’ve been together so long!

ANNA

Mom!

Zac can finally breath again. Anna stops touching him.

ZAC

(squeakily)

Isn’t that a bit much to ask of us?

Mrs. Conlon waves away his concern. Anna looks at him quizzically.

Mrs. Conlon and Mrs. Angelili reach their hands across the table and squeeze each other’s hand.

MRS. CONLON

Remember when we brought them home from the hospital?

ZAC

Oh god, mom, not this again.

MRS. ANGELILI

Yes. We always knew this day would come.

Patrick makes a gagging face and Anna laughs. Mrs. Conlon gently smacks him.

PATRICK

(to Zac and Anna)

Do you guys want to go out after this? I’m meeting some friends.

ANNA

I’m down if Zac is.

Zac moves some food around on his plate with his fork.

ZAC

I kind of just want to go home and watch a movie. I’m tired.

Anna grasps his arm.

ANNA

Okay, let’s do that.

(to Patrick)

Maybe next time.

Patrick SIGHS and takes a bite of food.

INT. ANNA AND ZAC'S APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

A TV is on in the empty living room. The lights are dim.

Anna runs in and jumps onto the couch with a bowl of popcorn.

ANNA

Zac! Come on! Let’s start the movie!

Zac slowly walks in holding two glasses.

ANNA

If I fall asleep, I’m cuddling you.

She pats the seat next to her. Zac sits down and hands her a glass. Anna kisses him and snuggles into his side.

ANNA

I love doing this with you.

Zac picks up the remote and starts the movie. A romcom.

Later, Zac stands up.

ZAC

Will you excuse me for a minute?

Anna shuffles around to let him up. As soon as he’s out of sight, Anna picks up her cellphone and dials.

ANNA

(whispering)

Becca! Zac is acting funny tonight. I think he’s about to propose.

(beat)

It’s about time! We’ve only been together our entire lives.

(beat)

Like a fairy tale!

(beat)

He’s coming back. Okay. Call you later.

Anna hastily hangs up the phone and shoves it under a couch cushion. Zac sits down next to her.

ANNA

Everything okay?

ZAC

Yeah, yeah. There’s something I want to talk to you about.

ANNA

Yes?

ZAC

We’ve been together a long time.

ANNA

Basically our whole lives.

ZAC

Exactly. Forever. And everyone expects us to be together forever.

Anna takes his hand in hers.

ANNA

Zac, I feel like that, too.

ZAC

It’s so much pressure. I feel overwhelmed.

ANNA

We’ve gotten through a lot together. We can make it through anything.

Zac takes his hand back.

ZAC

That’s just the thing. We’ve been together so long that I don’t know if I could get through anything on my own.

ANNA

What are you saying, Zac?

ZAC

I want to break up.

Anna shoots off the couch.

ANNA

You want to what?

ZAC

I just can’t do this anymore.

She picks up a throw pillow and bashes him over the head with it.

ZAC

I just need some time.

ANNA

Some time?

She thrashes him with the pillow again.

ANNA

You mean, like you’ve taken my whole life? You keep telling me you love me. Was that all a lie?

ZAC

Anna, I do love you...

ANNA

Liar!

Zac opens his mouth to speak. Anna picks up the bowl of popcorn and dumps it over Zac’s head.

Anna marches to the

BEDROOM

Anna throws an open suitcase onto the bed. She shoves clothes and other items in. Zac walks in.

ZAC

Anna, you don’t have to leave.

ANNA

I can’t stay here!

She angrily zips the suitcase and shoves past Zac.

She stomps through the apartment, dragging her suitcase behind her. Zac follows her. She opens the door.

ZAC

Where are you going?

ANNA

Don’t call me.

Anna walks out and slams the door behind her.

INT. BECCA’S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna flops on the couch. Becca, now 23, sits next to her.

BECCA

So, how are you doing?

ANNA

I’m okay.

BECCA

(sarcastically)

You sure look it.

Anna rolls her eyes.

BECCA

It’s Sunday.

ANNA

No way. I can’t see Zac or any of the Conlons right now.

BECCA

Are you sure? You’ve never missed.

ANNA

They’ll just have to get along without me this time.

(beat)

I need to find an apartment.

BECCA

You can move in with me.

Anna sits up.

ANNA

What about your roommate?

BECCA

Jealous Jessica? She moved out last week. Said she can’t stand how I live.

The apartment is crowded with dirty dishes, crafting supplies, kitschy items, and books.

ANNA

I don’t know...

BECCA

Or you could move in with your mom.

ANNA

And live right next door to the Conlons again? No, thank you.

BECCA

I’m a solid option...

ANNA

I’ll think about it.

Anna’s phone RINGS. She answers it.

ANNA

Hi, mom.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

Where are you?

ANNA

I’m not coming this week.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

Just because of Zac? Honey, this is tradition.

ANNA

You won’t miss me for one night.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

You’ve never missed. Not even when your father passed away.

ANNA

Well, I don’t feel very welcomed right now.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

You’re always welcome. Come home! I’ll spruce up your room for you.

Anna stands and paces Becca’s apartment.

ANNA

I am not moving home.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

Then where will you go?

ANNA

I’m moving in with Becca.

MRS. ANGELILI (V.O.)

That’s all the way across town!

ANNA

Right now, the further, the better.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA’S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna and Becca sit on a couch in the LIVING ROOM.

SUPER: “ONE MONTH LATER”

There are still a few of Anna’s boxes strewn around the already cramped apartment.

BECCA

Let’s go out. Have some fun.

ANNA

This is fun.

BECCA

You haven’t gone out since you and Zac broke up.

ANNA

I like being at home.

Becca turns fully toward Anna.

BECCA

I have to tell you something.

ANNA

What?

BECCA

Zac has a new girlfriend. I saw them at the bar this weekend.

ANNA

He what! How could he throw us away like this?

Anna throws a pillow across the room and fumes.

ANNA

How long?

BECCA

I don’t know, I just saw them at The Attic last weekend.

ANNA

The Attic was our place! What a rat. What am I going to do?

BECCA

What you need is a new man.

ANNA

I don’t want a new man, I want Zac.

BECCA

Either Zac will get jealous and beg for you back or you’ll find new love. Win-win!

ANNA

Do you really think I could get him back?

INT. RADIO STATION  - AFTERNOON

Patrick sits in the production control room while the afternoon host, JUSTIN (30s), is on air in the booth.

JUSTIN

And we’ll be right back with more of the Drive Home with Justin Zee in just a few minutes.

The on air sign goes out and Justin sits back in his chair. Patrick buzzes in.

PATRICK

You did great. In the next segment, make sure to alert listeners to the traffic accident on I-90.

JUSTIN

Glad I don’t have to drive that home.

DYLAN (20s) messes with some of the controls.

DYLAN

You going out tonight?

PATRICK

Yeah.

DYLAN

So things didn’t work out with the last girl?

PATRICK

Nah. Maybe tonight will be my lucky night.

DYLAN

You’re always getting lucky.

They fist bump and laugh.

INT. THE SANDBAR - EVENING

The place is crowded and the DJ blares MUSIC.

Patrick is at the bar with Dylan and they scope out women. Patrick spots a sexy woman and makes his way to her.

PATRICK

Hi, I’m Patrick. What’s your name?

The woman, TRACEY (20s), smiles seductively. She’s there with a blonde, vivacious friend who we later find out is KATIE (20s). Tracey extends her hand.

TRACEY

I’m Tracey.

Patrick feigns shock. He’s a little over dramatic and knocks into another patron.

PATRICK

Sorry.

(to Tracey)

Tracey! I would’ve guessed your name was beautiful or stunning because you are.

Tracey and her friend giggle.

PATRICK

Tracey, would you like a drink?

Tracey nods and they go to the bar.

Becca and Anna get drinks at the opposite end of the bar. They survey the area and the men there. Some check them out in return. Becca subtly points to a man near them.

BECCA

What about that guy?

ANNA

Too creepy.

BECCA

Okay. What about that one?

She points to another man. Anna shakes her head “no”.

Patrick spots the two girls as he buys drinks.

PATRICK

(to Tracey)

I’ll be right back.

He walks down to Anna and Becca.

PATRICK

Anna?

Anna turns around and sees Patrick.

ANNA

Hey, Patrick.

PATRICK

What are you doing here?

ANNA

Just having a girls’ night.

Becca waves.

BECCA

Hey.

He nods.

PATRICK

I haven’t seen you here before.

ANNA

First time for everything.

PATRICK

Let me buy you a drink.

He motions for the bartender.

PATRICK

Whatever the ladies want.

ANNA

Cranberry and vodka.

BECCA

A shot of tequila.

The bartender makes their drinks. The three friends drink.

PATRICK

I didn’t expect to see you out so soon.

ANNA

I didn’t expect Zac to get a new girlfriend so soon.

Patrick sips his drink but is startled.

PATRICK

He has a new girlfriend?

He dribbles his drink down his shirt. Anna scowls and hands him a napkin.

PATRICK

I’m sorry.

ANNA

Time to move on, I guess.

Anna and Becca drink.

BECCA

(to Patrick)

Here by yourself?

PATRICK

I came with my friend Dylan.

He points to Dylan who is flirting with a young lady on the dance floor.

BECCA

Looks like a real winner.

PATRICK

We work at the station together.

(to Anna)

Are you okay?

ANNA

Okay as I can be.

Patrick gets closer.

PATRICK

We haven’t hung out much. At least not without my brother.

Anna looks forlornly past Patrick.

PATRICK

You guys did everything together.

ANNA

Yeah, well, he doesn’t want that anymore. Apparently, he wants anyone other than me.

PATRICK

I’ve missed you at Sunday night dinners.

ANNA

I can’t go there.

PATRICK

I know.

(beat)

My little brother is an idiot but I know he cares about you.

BECCA

He has a funny was of showing it.

PATRICK

Anna, you know you can call me whenever you need anything.

Anna looks away and shoots her drink.

ANNA

So what are you doing here alone, Patrick?

She gets another drink and takes a sip. Patrick gets a beer.

PATRICK

I’m not alone, I’m here with...Tracey, I think her name is. Well, I found her here anyway.

He points towards Tracey down the bar. Tracey looks bored.

BECCA

She doesn’t look too interested. You know, I bet women would fall all over you if you were a little more serious.

PATRICK

Who says they don’t?

He drinks his beer. Anna playfully smacks his arm and he laughs.

ANNA

You couldn’t be serious if you tried.

PATRICK

Oh, is that so?

(beat)

Just depends on who I’m with.

ANNA

What about with me?

PATRICK

Oh, I’m very serious when it comes to you.

BECCA

I’m gonna go. Anna, are you ready?

ANNA

Sure, Becca.

(to Patrick)

Thanks for tonight. It was fun.

PATRICK

I had a good time, too.

Anna and Becca leave the bar.

Patrick walks back to Tracey. He looks at Anna over his shoulder and trips a little.

PATRICK

(to Tracey)

Wanna get out of here?

INT. BECCA’S CAR - NIGHT

Becca and Anna drive home.

BECCA

Sorry tonight was a bust.

ANNA

I had a great time.

BECCA

You spend the entire evening with Patrick. You didn’t find a new guy.

Anna huffs like the teenager she once was.

BECCA

Wait. What if Patrick was your new guy?

ANNA

Patrick is my friend. I don’t want to hurt him.

BECCA

Hurt? It’s Patrick. He gets over girls faster than the wind blows.

ANNA

Maybe if he wasn’t Zac’s brother, though.

BECCA

Zac, Zac, Zac! If he hadn’t dumped you, none of this would be happening.

Becca wails on the horn. She flips her hair away from her face and calms the fuck down. Becca swerves in and out of traffic.

ANNA

What if I just hang out with Patrick more? Go on a couple dates.

BECCA

As long as you flaunt it in front of Zac.

Anna scoffs.

BECCA

Otherwise, he won’t get jealous and beg for you back!

Anna digs her cellphone out of her purse.

ANNA

Hey, Patrick.

INT. PATRICK’S CAR - SAME

Tracey is kissing Patrick’s neck as he drives.

PATRICK

Anna. Long time, no talk.

INTERCUT - PHONE CALL

Tracey peels herself off Patrick and slumps into the passenger seat.

TRACEY

Hey! I was having fun.

Patrick covers his phone.

PATRICK

(to Tracey)

Just a minute.

ANNA

So I was thinking...You’re really fun to hang out with. Can we meet up again? Alone?

Tracey tries to kiss Patrick but he shoves her off of him.

PATRICK

Umm, yeah, I’d like that.

Anna hangs up the phone and smirks. Becca shakes her head.

BECCA

(wailing on the horn)

Woo hoo!

INT. THE ATTIC - EVENING

Patrick and Anna stand at the bar and sip drinks as MUSIC blares and lights flash around them. Anna looks around but doesn’t see who she’s looking for.

ANNA

Good song. I love this one.

PATRICK

Oh, yeah, yeah. Me, too. Wanna dance?

ANNA

Oh, um, no. I’m okay.

Patrick deflates a little.

Anna looks around again. Patrick taps the side of his glass. It almost tips over but he catches it.

PATRICK

It’s like we didn’t just do this a few nights ago.

ANNA

It’s never been just us before.

PATRICK

This was your idea.

ANNA

I know! Maybe we should hang out more.

PATRICK

What about Zac?

ANNA

What about him?

PATRICK

It might make him uncomfortable.

ANNA

We’re just hanging out! It’s not like we’re dating.

Patrick contemplates this.

PATRICK

That’s fair. Okay, we can hang out, but if Zac gets weird about it...

ANNA

Then we’ll figure it out. In the meantime, let’s just have some fun.

A sultry WOMAN walks up to them but looks at Patrick.

WOMAN

Hello, sexy. Wanna dance?

PATRICK

Oh, uh, I’m here with my friend.

He motions to Anna but pokes her in the face.

PATRICK

Oh, god, I’m sorry.

He fishes ice out of his drink and hands it to Anna but she shoos him away while cradling her face.

The woman looks Anna up and down.

WOMAN

She could join us.

ANNA

(intrigued)

That’s okay. You guys have fun.

Patrick looks between the women.

PATRICK

I think I’ll pass tonight.

WOMAN

Your loss.

She walks off.

Anna looks thoughtfully at Patrick. “Truly, Madly, Deeply” plays.

ANNA

I’ll take that dance now.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Anna slams the door shut behind her. Becca comes out of the bathroom with toothbrush in mouth.

ANNA

Zac wasn’t at the club tonight.

Anna slams her purse down on the counter and flops onto the couch.

Becca spits toothpaste into the kitchen sink and joins Anna.

ANNA

This is never going to work. I’m so stupid.

BECCA

Hey! We are not stupid. You just need to go places he likes to go.

ANNA

What if Patrick catches on?

BECCA

Then you have a free out. No harm, no foul.

Anna nods.

INT. MILLCREEK MALL - DAY

Anna and Patrick walk past shops, weaving around people. Anna sips a coffee drink. They pass a store called “I HEART THE 80S”. Anna stops, so Patrick does, too.

ANNA

Zac loved this store.

PATRICK

Totally his jam.

ANNA

Want to go in?

PATRICK

Are you sure?

ANNA

I mean, yeah, who not. I’m not scared.

PATRICK

Okay.

INT. I HEART THE 80S STORE - MOMENTS LATER

The store is filled with rows of ‘80s memorabilia. POP MUSIC plays. Anna and Patrick step into an aisle with Trolls dolls. Patrick picks one up and pokes at its jewel-encrusted belly button.

PATRICK

Do you think these are how girls got the idea to pierce their belly buttons?

Anna swipes the toy from his hands.

ANNA

They’re cute! I used to have some. And no, I’ve never wanted to pierce my belly button.

Patrick looks briefly to her midriff.

They walk into another aisle filled with retro Nintendo merchandise. Anna spots a Donkey Kong doll and scoops it up.

ANNA

Oh my god! This would be perfect for the video game bar!

Her shoulders slump and she puts the doll back.

ANNA

I don’t know if that will ever happen now.

Patrick pats her shoulder.

PATRICK

You could still do it without Zac.

ANNA

I don’t know if I could.

PATRICK

Maybe you guys will find a way to work together.

Anna walks out of the store and Patrick follows.

INT. MILLCREEK MALL - MOMENTS LATER

Anna flops onto a bench. Patrick goes to her.

PATRICK

Do you want to go see a movie? We’ll pick the dumbest one and make fun of it the whole time.

A faint smile graces Anna’s lips.

ANNA

Okay.

They’re about to leave when Zac approaches them. He looks confused.

ANNA

Hey, Zac.

ZAC

Hey.

ANNA

How’ve you been?

ZAC

I was gonna ask you the same thing.

Zac stares at Patrick like a dog does to a stranger who’s gotten too close to its human.

PATRICK

Hey, Zac.

ZAC

(to Anna)

I didn’t know you and Patrick hang out.

ANNA

Yeah, well, I haven’t felt too welcome since the breakup.

The silence is so deafening.

ANNA

We were about to catch a movie. Want to come?

ZAC

Thanks, but I can’t. Gotta meet my girlfriend.

ANNA

Oh, right, your girlfriend.

Anna glares at Zac and Zac glares back. Anna and Patrick walk away. Zac angrily stares after them.

INT. ZAC’S APARTMENT - DAY

Zac and Patrick sit on the couch playing Call of Duty.

ZAC

Hey man, so I was wondering if you think you could get me some airtime for the video game bar?

PATRICK

You’re moving forward with that?

ZAC

Yeah! I found a great spot and everything. Just sorting out rent and publicity.

PATRICK

Does Anna know?

ZAC

I haven’t talked to her about it.

PATRICK

She was really sad at the mall thinking she was never gonna get to do that now.

Zac SIGHS and keeps playing.

PATRICK

You should tell her. Maybe you guys can find a way to work together.

ZAC

I need more time.

PATRICK

Just don’t do it without her.

ZAC

What’s with you and her anyway.

Patrick puts down his controller and looks at Zac.

PATRICK

We’re friends.

ZAC

Yeah, right.

PATRICK

Why not?

ZAC

You guys have never been friends before.

PATRICK

Listen, you messed her up. I’m just there for her. That’s all.

Zac puts down his controller, too.

ZAC

Yeah, that’s cool. I hope she’s alright.

PATRICK

She’s been better.

Zac wipes his hands down his face.

PATRICK

But she’ll be fine eventually.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna vacuums and cradles her phone between her ear and shoulder.

ANNA

Hey, mom. Tell Mrs. Conlon to set my place at the table this Sunday.

(beat)

What? I can’t hear you over the vacuum.

(beat)

Oh. Yes, I’m coming to Sunday dinner.

(beat)

I know he’ll be there. Shit.

The vacuum sucks up a sock and stops working. Anna turns it off and flips it over to fix it.

ANNA

No, not about that, my vacuum broke. I know Zac’ll be there and I don’t care. He doesn’t get to keep me out of places I belong.

(beat)

I love you, too. See you Sunday.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - EVENING

Mr. and Mrs. Conlon, Mrs. Angelili, Anna, and Patrick sit at the table. Patrick and Anna sit across from each other. Zac walks in and sits at the head of the table. Mr. Angelili’s old spot. Anna’s jaw hangs open.

MRS. CONLON

It’s so good to see you hear again, Anna. We’ve missed you.

ANNA

I thought it was time.

She glares at Zac.

ANNA

No use in staying away from those I love.

Zac doesn’t look at her and takes a bite of food.

ANNA

Why are you sitting there, Zac?

ZAC

I’ve been sitting here for weeks. Couldn’t stay in my old spot.

ANNA

But that was my dad’s spot.

ZAC

He’s been gone for years. Don’t you think it’s time to get over it.

Anna slumps, deflated.

Throughout dinner, Patrick subtly looks at Anna and she returns the glances. Zac catches them the last time.

ZAC

Is there something going on between you two?

ANNA

We’ve hung out a couple times.

ZAC

Besides the mall?

Anna slams the table.

ANNA

Like you have any room to talk. You have a new girlfriend!

ZAC

So you two are together!

MRS. CONLON

Zac, since when do you have a girlfriend?

ZAC

About a month, mom.

(to Anna)

You can’t date my brother.

MRS. ANGELILI

You’re dating Patrick?

ANNA

(to Zac)

You’re such a hypocrite.

ZAC

You’re only doing this to make me jealous.

Anna flinches and Patrick cocks his head at her. Anna stands up.

ANNA

Clearly, I shouldn’t have come here.

She throws her napkin on the table and leaves.

PATRICK

Smooth, Zac.

He gets up.

ZAC

You’re going after her?

PATRICK

One of us should.

Patrick leaves.

EXT. CONLON HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER

Anna stands by her car and fumes. Patrick jogs up to her.

PATRICK

Want to get out of here?

ANNA

What did you have in mind?

INT. PATRICK’S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Anna and Patrick sit on his couch and play a video game. They’re at opposite ends.

PATRICK

I’m sorry about Zac.

ANNA

He has no room to talk. It’s not like we’re dating.

Anna scowls and crosses her arms over her chest. Patrick sets down his controller and scoots closer to her.

PATRICK

Do you want to stop hanging out?

ANNA

No! Zac doesn’t dictate my life. Or yours. Do you want to stop hanging out?

PATRICK

I couldn’t leave a friend in need.

ANNA

Exactly, all we are is friends.

Patrick and Anna are close now. They look into each other’s eyes.

PATRICK

All we are is friends?

(beat)

I like being with you.

ANNA

I like spending time with you, too, Patrick.

Patrick closes the gap between them and kisses Anna. Anna’s eyes fly wide open. She backs away and covers her mouth with her hands.

PATRICK

Anna...

Anna gets up.

ANNA

I’m going to go.

Patrick stands and reaches for her but she moves away.

ANNA

Patrick, I need some time.

INT. MILLCREEK MALL - DAY

Anna and Becca walk around the mall. They carry bags of clothes and other items.

ANNA

Zac was so pissed.

BECCA

Gee, I wonder why.

ANNA

He was so jealous. It’s working.

BECCA

How are you going to let Patrick down once Zac wants to be with you again?

ANNA

Let him down?

BECCA

He kissed you!

ANNA

That was just the heat of the moment. Everything is under control.

Anna’s phone RINGS. She digs it out of her purse and answers.

ANNA

Hello.

ZAC  (V.O.)

It’s Zac.

INT. ZAC'S APARTMENT - SAME TIME

Zac paces his apartment.

INTERCUT: PHONE CALL

ANNA

What do you want?

ZAC

I think I found a place for the video game bar.

ANNA

You still want to do that?

ZAC

Maybe. We should at least talk.

INT. TIPSY BEAN CAFE - DAY

The space is cozy. There are colorful murals on the walls, colorful rugs, and a large pastry and food display case.

Zac hunches over a coffee at a remote table in the bustling cafe. The door jingles and Anna comes in. Zac stands and she goes to the table. They sit.

ZAC

Before we talk about the bar, there’s something else. I want you to stop seeing Patrick.

ANNA

That isn’t your decision to make.

ZAC

He’s my brother.

ANNA

He’s my friend.

ZAC

Anna...

ANNA

I’m not going to stop seeing Patrick.

ZAC

Date anyone but Patrick.

ANNA

You don’t get a say!

ZAC

He’s my brother!

Anna SCOFFS.

ZAC

You’re being vindictive. You get like this when you’re mad. It’s part of why I needed a break.

Anna stands.

ANNA

How’s this for vindictive.

She picks up Zac’s coffee and throws it in his face. The cafe collectively GASPS.

ANNA

Screw you.

Anna storms out and leaves Zac sopping and sticky.

INT. THE ATTIC - EVENING

The space is dark and sparsely decorated, except for some colored lights. Music BLARES. It’s packed.

Patrick and Anna sit at a high top table. Anna looks around. She spots Zac with Katie at the bar. Zac sees them and scowls. Anna quickly turns to Patrick.

ANNA

Patrick, I want to ask you something.

Anna reaches her hand across the table for Patrick’s.

ANNA

What if we went on a date.

Patrick looks at their hands. Zac stomps over to them.

ZAC

Stop holding hands!

Patrick instinctively moves his hand but Anna grabs it again.

ANNA

I don’t want to.

PATRICK

Maybe this isn’t a good idea.

Anna shoots her drink with a fuck it attitude.

ANNA

Zac made his decision.

Zac GROWLS.

ZAC

You’re impossible.

He walks back to his girlfriend. Anna raises her hand.

ANNA

Bill, please!

A waitress comes by and puts Anna’s and Patrick’s bills on the table. Anna reaches inside her purse but comes up short.

ANNA

Rats. I need to go to an ATM.

Patrick takes her bill.

ANNA

You don’t have to do that.

PATRICK

It’s just some drinks, Anna. No big deal.

ANNA

Thanks, Patrick.

She puts her purse down.

PATRICK

So you’re saying you wouldn’t mind dating me?

ANNA

That is what I’m saying.

PATRICK

Would you like to go to dinner with me?

ANNA

Absolutely.

PATRICK

Thursday at six?

ANNA

I want to go to that new ramen place.

PATRICK

Done.

ANNA

Can’t wait.

INT. RAMEN BAR - EVENING

Patrick and Anna sit at a table and eat ramen. The restaurant is intimately lit and there are a few other full tables. The atmosphere is quiet, subdued.

ANNA

This is really good.

PATRICK

As good as you were expecting?

ANNA

Well, excellent ramen is hard to come by in Erie, PA.

Patrick reaches across the table and takes Anna’s hand in his. Anna squeezes his hand in reply.

The waiter comes to the table.

WAITER

Anything else for you this evening?

Patrick startles and brings his hand back. He knocks over a glass of water and it splashes Anna. She dabs herself with a napkin.

PATRICK

Shit! I’m sorry.

He grabs napkins, stands too quickly, and knocks into the waiter.

PATRICK

Oh no!

He grabs the waiter’s arm before he falls over. Anna covers her mouth and quietly laughs.

PATRICK

I’m so sorry. No, no, we’re good here. Just the bill, I think.

He sits back down and the agitated waiter walks away. Anna is full on laughing now.

ANNA

You’re so clumsy!

PATRICK

I’m just nervous.

ANNA

Why?

Patrick leans in and so does Anna.

PATRICK

I’ve wanted to take you out for a long time.

Anna sits back.

PATRICK

But I promise I won’t do anything to make you uncomfortable. We’ll go at your speed.

Anna reaches across the table for Patrick’s hand.

ANNA

That sounds perfect.

The waiter appears and hands the bill to Patrick. Patrick pays him and the waiter disappears. They get up to leave the restaurant. Patrick stumbles over a chair leg as they go.

INT. PATRICK'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Anna and Patrick sit on his couch and play a video game. After a round, Patrick sets down his controller and stretches his arm around Anna’s shoulders. She looks at him and smirks.

ANNA

Subtle.

PATRICK

I’ll move if you want me to.

ANNA

No, I like it.

Patrick relaxes.

PATRICK

Wanna watch a movie?

ANNA

Sure.

Patrick puts one on and replaces his arm around Anna’s shoulders.

Later, Anna wakes up on Patrick’s couch alone. Groggily, she walks to the

BATHROOM

Anna opens the bathroom door. Patrick stands there naked and wraps himself in a towel.

ANNA

Oh my god!

Patrick startles and finishes wrapping himself.

PATRICK

Anna!

Anna covers her eyes and turns away.

ANNA

Oh my god, I’m sorry.

PATRICK

It’s okay. I’m covered now.

Anna turns back around and looks at him.

ANNA

I just had to use the bathroom.

Patrick steps out of the bathroom and brushes past Anna. She looks him up and down before stepping in. Damn.

ANNA

I’ll...I’ll, uh, just be a minute.

Later, in the

LIVING ROOM

Anna sits on the couch. Patrick comes out of his room fully dressed and sits next to her.

PATRICK

When can I see you again?

ANNA

Sunday night dinner.

PATRICK

Can we do something afterwards?

ANNA

I’d like that.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - EVENING

Anna and Patrick sit next to each other and make eyes at each other the whole time.

PATRICK

Hey, Anna, would you pass me the peas, please.

Anna looks to Zac, still sitting in her father’s spot, who stabs at his plate. She looks at Patrick.

ANNA

(giggling)

Sure.

She hands Patrick the peas. This goes on all evening.

ZAC

Hey, Anna. I drew up a plan for the video game bar. We should go over it soon.

ANNA

Oh, yeah. That’s awesome.

Anna leans into Patrick. Zac is grumpy. Anna reaches across the table for Zac’s hand.

ANNA

Let’s get together soon and go over it. We should really keep moving with the plans.

ZAC

Yeah, good.

Patrick kisses Anna’s cheek. The parents sit in stunned silence. Zac stabs with his fork and fumes. He sees and he’s not happy. Anna smirks devilishly at him.

INT. PATRICK'S CAR - NIGHT

PATRICK

I saw you checking me out.

ANNA

You were sitting right next to me! You were looking at me, too!

PATRICK

I can’t help it.

Patrick and Anna look at each other.

PATRICK

I’ll take you home.

INT. ELEVATOR, ANNA’S APARTMENT BUILDING - LATER

Anna and Patrick ride the elevator to her floor. They hold hands. Anna isn’t pulling away, so Patrick tucks her hair behind her ear.

PATRICK

(whispering)

I love this dress on you.

ANNA

What else do you love on me?

Patrick rubs his hands up and down Anna’s arms. They look into each other’s eyes.

The elevator DINGS and the door open.

INT. ANNA’S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

They walk briskly down the hallway and hold hands. At Anna’s door, she fumbles with the keys as Patrick holds her by the waist. She gets the door open and they stumble inside.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER

Anna barely sets the keys on the counter and Patrick pulls her to the couch. He kisses her. She doesn’t back away. Patrick kisses her again. Anna deepens the kiss and they begin making out.

ANNA

(moaning)

Zac.

Patrick stops kissing her.

ANNA

Oh my god. You’re not Zac.

PATRICK

No, I definitely am not.

(beat)

Maybe this wasn’t a good idea.

He stands.

ANNA

Patrick, wait. I’m sorry. I just got carried away.

Patrick sits down.

ANNA

I just want to be with you. Have some fun.

There’s a tense pause.

PATRICK

You’re not going to get bored with me, are you?

ANNA

What?

PATRICK

I’m just some fun before Zac comes to his senses.

ANNA

Patrick, no.

She’s tense but she caresses his face.

ANNA

I wouldn’t do that to you.

Patrick kisses her gently and strokes her hair.

PATRICK

What’s your favorite color?

ANNA

Why?

PATRICK

Because I don’t know your favorite color.

BECCA (O.S.)

It’s pink. Raspberry pink.

Anna’s face turns bright red.

ANNA

Becca?

BECCA (O.S.)

Yes?

ANNA

You’re here?

BECCA (O.S.)

Don’t worry, I’m staying in my room.

ANNA

Could you shut your door.

BECCA (O.S.)

Don’t get too crazy out there.

They hear a door close. Anna is still flushed.

ANNA

So what’s your favorite color?

PATRICK

Green. What’s your favorite place?

ANNA

My dad’s grave.

PATRICK

Really? That’s kinda sad.

ANNA

It’s so peaceful there and I feel close to him.

PATRICK

I haven’t been there since the funeral.

ANNA

When you were there with what’s-her-name.

PATRICK

Oh god, I really don’t remember her name. I can’t believe my mom didn’t skin me alive for bringing a date to a funeral.

Anna laughs.

ANNA

You’ve always been into the ladies.

PATRICK

Maybe you and I can go sometime.

Anna nods.

ANNA

Where’s your favorite place?

PATRICK

Wherever I’m with my family.

ANNA

Cheesy. Boxers or briefs.

PATRICK

Neither. Wanna see?

He wiggles his eyebrows. Anna laughs.

BECCA (O.S.)

(shouting)

No sex!

ANNA

BECCA!

Patrick doubles over laughing.

Anna yawns. Patrick pulls her into him and kisses the top of her head.

PATRICK

You should go to bed.

He gets up from the couch and extends his hands to Anna. He helps her up and they walk to the door.

ANNA

Let’s do this again soon.

PATRICK

The kissing? We could do that right now.

He kisses her.

ANNA

No, although I like that. The being together.

Patrick smiles.

PATRICK

Yeah, that’d be great.

(beat)

Sweet dreams, Anna.

ANNA

Good night, Patrick.

She opens the door and he walks out.

INT. MOVIE THEATER - NIGHT

Patrick and Anna walk out of a theater into the main lobby. They laugh and hold hands. He holds the bucket of leftover popcorn and she picks at it. They’re really cute!

In the lobby, they’re about to go out the doors when they run into none other than Zac.

ANNA

Zac! Hey!

PATRICK

Hey, man.

Zac shifts awkwardly.

ZAC

Hey, guys. Funny running into you here.

Katie walks up to Zac and takes his elbow. Anna’s jaw falls open. This woman looks like all the girls Anna loved to hate in high school.

KATIE

Hey, honey, ready to go?

Katie looks at Patrick and Anna.

KATIE

Oh, hi, I’m Katie.

ZAC

Katie, this is my brother Patrick and our...friend...Anna. Katie is my girlfriend.

Katie shakes hands with everyone. She’s obnoxiously nice.

KATIE

Your brother! Oh, it’s so nice to meet you. And Anna is your girlfriend.

Anna starts to shake her head “no” but catches herself. She tries to match Katie’s bubbliness.

ANNA

Yeah, yeah, I’m Patrick’s girlfriend. I’ve known these two for practically ever!

Zac gives her a look like “don’t tell her”. Anna side-eyes him.

KATIE

We should all go out sometime! It would be so nice to get to know Zac’s family.

Zac looks pale. Patrick looks to Anna. Anna is just going with it.

ANNA

That would be wonderful! I could tell you all kinds of stories.

The girls giggle.

ZAC

I don’t know about that.

KATIE

Why not? Going out with your brother and his girlfriend would be fun.

Zac shifts uncomfortably again and Patrick covers a small laugh with a cough.

ZAC

Yeah, okay, sure, you’re right.

(beat)

We should get going.

PATRICK

Us, too. Can’t have all the fun in one night.

ZAC

Yeah. Good to see you guys.

Zac interlaces his fingers with Katie’s and they walk out of the theater. Patrick turns to Anna and smiles.

PATRICK

You took that better than I was expecting.

ANNA

What? She seems nice.

Patrick slings his arm around Anna’s shoulders.

INT. RESTAURANT - EVENING

Anna and Patrick sit on one side of a booth and Zac sits across from them. Katie rushes into the booth and sits next to Zac.

KATIE

Sorry I’m late. I would’ve come sooner but I had to spend some time with my girl friend Tracey. Apparently, some guy she met at the bar and slept with gave her his number, but it’s the number of a Pizza Hut. Can you believe that?

Patrick looks guilty. Anna notices and pinches his arm. He mouths “sorry” to her. Patrick composes himself and clears his throat.

PATRICK

So, Katie, how did you and Zac meet?

KATIE

Furniture shopping, of all places! He was so lost looking for a new couch. He said his crazy ex took his. Luckily, I was working that day and helped him out. Steered him away from an ugly green one and settle on a nice leather couch.

Anna stabs at her plate. Zac is pale. Patrick looks worried.

ANNA

Zac always has had interesting tastes.

She stabs at her plate again.

KATIE

That’s right, you’ve known them for a long time. I bet you knew his ex, too.

ANNA

Oh yeah, I knew her. But Zac calls all of his girlfriends crazy. Trust me, I’ve known him my whole life.

She smiles at Zac for the only time that evening. He gulps and slinks down.

KATIE

Oh, so you’ve known the Conlon boys forever.

ANNA

Yeah, I grew up next door.

KATIE

Oh my god, how cute that you ended up with Patrick! Like a fairy tale. Girl next door falls for boy next door. Oh, it’s so cute I could shriek!

ZAC

Please, don’t.

Katie’s invincible ignorance is too resilient.

KATIE

(to Anna)

You get to go to the famed Sunday night dinners. I hope to come to one soon. It’ll be nice having a friendly face there.

ANNA

We girls gotta stick together. Can’t ever be too sure with these Conlon boys.

She nudges Patrick and they giggle maniacally.

KATIE

If you guys will excuse me for a minute. I need to use the ladies’ room.

She squeezes past Zac. When she’s out of earshot, Anna turns accusatorially towards Zac. She points her fork at him.

ANNA

You called me your crazy ex? What the hell!

ZAC

I didn’t know what else to say.

ANNA

How about, “I just broke up with my lifelong girlfriend and I’m a little blue.”

ZAC

I was nervous! I wanted her to like me.

ANNA

Because girls love guys who date crazy girls?

ZAC

I’m sorry! I don’t really think you’re crazy.

PATRICK

Guys, keep it down.

ZAC

You stay out of this. I’m still pissed you’re dating Anna.

PATRICK

Pissed at me? You wasted no time moving on. At least Anna and I happened naturally.

ZAC

Have you always had a thing for her? Just waiting to pounce?

PATRICK

What the fuck is that supposed to mean. I’ve known Anna forever, too. She’s not your property.

At that moment, Katie appears in all her peppy glory. She stands at the head of the table and stares at her three companions, who are all red in the face and angry.

KATIE

Hey, guys, what did I miss?

Zac stands up.

ZAC

Nothing. We’re gonna leave.

KATIE

But I’m not done eating.

She scoots past Zac and sits down. Defeated, Zac sits back down, too.

Katie eats but no one else does. No one makes eye contact. You’d need a machete to cut this tension.

KATIE

Is everything okay?

Anna GRUMBLES under her breath. Patrick SIGHS and rubs his face.

PATRICK

Katie, there’s something you should know. Zac and Anna dated for a while.

ANNA

For like our whole lives!

ZAC

Anna!

ANNA

Well, it’s true.

(to Katie)

I’m the crazy ex Zac told you about. We dated officially for like seven years, but we’ve been inseparable for most of our lives. Well...until about two months ago.

Katie looks shocked.

KATIE

You’re the ex.

ANNA

I’m the ex.

KATIE

Zac, she doesn’t seem crazy...

ZAC

She’s not. I was just nervous and wanted you to have pity on me. I felt so stupid in that store.

KATIE

Are you lying about anything else?

ZAC

No! And I won’t lie to you again. I’m sorry, Anna.

Anna nods. Katie takes Zac’s arm. Patrick puts his hand on Anna’s shoulder and squeezes.

PATRICK

(whispering to Anna)

You okay?

ANNA

I’ll be fine.

INT. PATRICK'S CAR - LATER

Anna stares out the window. Patrick looks over at her several times.

PATRICK

Some dinner.

She doesn’t look at him.

ANNA

Absolutely incredible.

Patrick puts his hand on her knee.

PATRICK

I’m sorry about tonight.

Anna finally looks at him.

ANNA

Am I really crazy?

PATRICK

No! I mean, you can get a little worked up but I wouldn’t call it crazy.

ANNA

A little worked up.

PATRICK

Zac was an idiot to say what he did.

ANNA

Yeah, I guess.

PATRICK

To me, you’re just the right amount of crazy. Not over the top, not subdued.

Anna weakly smiles and nods.

ANNA

Zac moved on so quickly.

PATRICK

He’s never been one to take his time.

ANNA

Like a dog with a bone.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna is haphazardly baking while Becca sits at the table and watches.

ANNA

Becca, you should’ve seen her. All smiles, no substance. What is Zac doing with someone like that?

BECCA

Oh, come on, Anna.

ANNA

We used to make fun of girls like that!

She throws an oven mitt down and HUFFS.

BECCA

What are you going to do?

Anna opens the oven. A smoke alarm blares as smoke fills the apartment. Anna hastily throws down the pan on the oven.

BECCA

Are you okay?

ANNA

Shit. Yeah, I’m fine. I just burnt the cookies again.

BECCA

You never bake.

ANNA

I’m surprising Patrick with his favorite cookies at family dinner tonight.

BECCA

You’re going through an awful lot for Patrick.

ANNA

I’ve got to sell it!

BECCA

Well, I’ll be sure to be gone tonight, just in case you two come back here.

Anna TSKS at her. She grabs a footstool and stands on it to turn off the BLARING smoke alarm.

Anna’s phone RINGS. Anna gets down to answer it.

ANNA

Hello?

ZAC (V.O.)

It’s Zac. Let’s get together. I want to explain myself.

INT. TIPSY BEAN CAFE - DAY

Zac and Anna it at the remote table in the cafe. It’s not as busy today.

ZAC

About Katie, I’m so sorry I called you crazy. I didn’t mean it. I just wanted her to like me.

ANNA

What’s so great about her that you had to jump to her immediately after me? Didn’t you miss me at all?

ZAC

That’s the thing! I did miss you! I missed you so much. I’ve never had to live without you.

ANNA

That’s your own fault.

ZAC

I know. But then I saw Katie and she was just so bright and friendly. She was instantly someone I could talk to. I missed that.

ANNA

So you like her because you can talk to her.

ZAC

She’s not constantly reminding me of everything that I’ve ever done, either. With her, I’m a blank slate.

Anna reaches across the table for his hand.

ANNA

It’s nice being known, though.

ZAC

That’s why you’re with Patrick, right?

Anna withdraws her hand.

ANNA

Yeah, yeah, I mean, he gets me. He’s known me forever and understands me.

ZAC

I guess it just scared me.

ANNA

Does it still scare you?

ZAC

I don’t know. There’s so much that Katie doesn’t know and it’s hard to fill her in.

ANNA

You know, we can still talk and stuff.

ZAC

It hasn’t felt like it.

ANNA

I know things have been weird but, for what it’s worth, I’m always here for you.

Zac meets her eyes. He gets lost in them like he used to.

ZAC

That’s good to know.

(beat)

I thought I was losing everything when I let you go.

ANNA

You don’t have to lose anything at all.

They hold hands.

ZAC

Anna, I’ve missed you.

ANNA

I’ve missed you, too, Zac. I’ve missed planning our bar together and doing life together.

ZAC

Me, too.

(beat)

That’s why I’ve asked someone here to meet with us today.

Anna looks at him quizzically. A tall man in a suit jacket, DAN FOUST (40s) walks up to them and shakes Zac’s hand.

ZAC

Anna, this is my realtor Dan Foust. Dan, this is my business partner, Anna. Well, hopefully we’re still partners.

Anna is bewildered. She regains her composure and shakes Dan’s hand.

ANNA

Yes. Yes, I’m Zac’s business partner.

Dan sits down with them and pulls out some papers from a folder.

DAN

Great! I wanted to go over some possible spots for your bar. Places for rent that have opened up.

He shows them a spread of a few places. Anna points to one.

ANNA

I’ve always liked 26th Street.

ZAC

It’s got a cool vibe over there.

DAN

That’s a great choice. The rent is a little on the high side but you can’t beat the area. I’ll call about it and put us in their ear. We’ll talk soon.

Dan shakes hands with each of them and walks away.

ANNA

We’re going to need to hire staff.

ZAC

At least one bartender, one waitress, and an IT guy.

ANNA

At least!

ZAC

Maybe two waitresses?

ANNA

We’re really doing this!

ZAC

We’re really doing this.

They hold hands excitedly.

EXT. ANGELILI BACKYARD - FOURTH OF JULY - DAY

Mr. and Mrs. Conlon, Mrs. Angelili, Patrick, and Anna are in the backyard. Mr. Conlon grills burgers. The wives sit in lounge chairs and talk. Patrick and Anna stand together off to the side and talk. It’s a beautiful day.

PATRICK

So I was thinking, maybe you and I could go out soon and do something special?

ANNA

What did you have in mind?

PATRICK

It’s a secret.

She playfully hits his arm.

ANNA

It’s always secrets with you.

PATRICK

But it’s a good one. Please?

ANNA

So the others have had been bad secrets?

PATRICK

You can’t name a single bad one and you know it. Please?

ANNA

Okay, okay, sure. I’ll go on a secret date with you.

They’re flirty and fun and Anna isn’t sure how much she’s pretending anymore.

MRS. CONLON

Does anyone know when Zac is getting here?

PATRICK

He texted me a while ago saying he’d be here by now.

At that, Zac walks into the backyard with Katie in tow. All bubbly and fun. Anna’s mood instantly dampens.

ZAC

Hey, everyone. Sorry we’re late.

MRS. CONLON

I didn’t know you were bringing a guest.

ANNA

Uhh...

PATRICK

(quietly)

Do you think maybe we should...

ZAC

Mom, this is Katie. Katie, this is my mom.

Mrs. Conlon rises. Mr. Conlon walks over to them and shakes Katie’s hand.

MR. CONLON

I’m Zac and Patrick’s dad. Nice to meet you.

KATIE

Nice to meet you all, too!

MRS. ANGELILI

I’m Anna’s mom. This is our backyard. Welcome!

Mrs. Angelili doesn’t rise from her chair.

ZAC

Umm, so. We, uh, we have some news we’d like to share.

Zac and Katie look at each other. He looks like he’s going to shit himself and she looks over the top giddy.

ZAC

We’re engaged.

KATIE

We’re getting married!

Katie flashes a ring. Everyone is shocked, fucking shocked.

MRS. CONLON

You’ve only been dating this one for a couple months and now you’re getting married?

ZAC

Mom, it just happened so quickly.

MRS. CONLON

Apparently, so quickly that you didn’t have time to introduce her to your mother!

Katie stubbornly hangs on to Zac’s arm.

KATIE

It’s not quick when it’s love, Mrs. Conlon. But I did ask him to bring me around sooner.

Katie playfully smacks Zac’s arm and giggles. Mrs. Conlon gathers herself. Mrs. Angelili rises and goes to Anna.

MRS. ANGELILI

(loudly)

Well, this isn’t how I thought things were going to go.

ANNA

(under her breath)

That’s for damn sure.

MRS. ANGELILI

It was supposed to be Zac and Anna!

PATRICK

(quietly to Anna)

You sure you’re okay?

Patrick and Anna move off to the side.

MRS. CONLON

Anna is with Patrick now.

MRS. ANGELILI

We both know that’s just a rebound.

Patrick looks to Anna who is pale.

MRS. CONLON

So your girl is just using my boys.

MRS. ANGELILI

I didn’t say that!

ANNA

Mom! You’re making this worse.

KATIE

Zac and Anna are old news. We’re all looking to the future now.

Mr. Conlon claps Zac on the back.

MR. CONLON

You’re right, Katie. Congratulations, son. What great news.

MRS. CONLON

Zachary, come here.

Zac walks to his mom and fiancée.

MRS. CONLON

I want you to have this.

She holds out her wedding band.

ZAC

Mom, are you sure?

MRS. CONLON

I always intended to give it to whichever of you got married first, so here.

Mrs. Conlon shoves the ring into Zac’s hand.

ZAC

Thank you.

Anna sulks. Patrick puts an arm around her.

PATRICK

This is a surprise.

ANNA

A big one.

PATRICK

Are you okay?

ANNA

He’s getting married? That was supposed to be my life.

PATRICK

I’m standing right here.

ANNA

This isn’t how any of this was supposed to go.

Anna crosses her arms over her chest. Patrick looks at her accusatorially.

PATRICK

How was this supposed to go, Anna?

ANNA

No, wait, that’s not what I meant.

PATRICK

Then what do you mean?

She uncrosses her arms and rubs Patrick’s back.

ANNA

I just...I’ve lost him for good.

PATRICK

So what am I? A consolation prize?

ANNA

No! I’m sorry.

Anna looks defeated. Patrick softens.

PATRICK

Wanna get out of here?

ANNA

But we haven’t even done fireworks yet.

PATRICK

I’ll take you out later to see them downtown.

Anna smiles.

ANNA

Okay.

Patrick smiles and then turns to the small crowd.

PATRICK

It was nice seeing everyone but Anna and I are gonna get out of here. Congratulations, Zac and Katie.

Anna and Patrick walk hand in hand out of the backyard. Zac watches Anna go.

INT. CONLON HOUSE, DINING ROOM - AFTERNOON

All of the usual suspects plus Katie sit around the table for Sunday dinner. Anna and Patrick chat the entire meal.

ZAC

If you two start feeding each other, I’m gonna be sick.

Katie smacks his arm.

KATIE

I think they’re so cute!

Zac GRUMBLES.

ANNA

I’m glad you two are so happy together, too. How’s wedding planning?

KATIE

Slow. Zac can’t make a decision to save his life. Maybe you could come with us some time and help? You know him better than anyone.

ANNA

Oh, uh, sure. I do know him pretty well.

The parents silently eat as they watch the scene unfold.

ZAC

Mom, you can help, too, if you want.

MRS. CONLON

Oh, I wouldn’t want to get in the way.

KATIE

Anna and Patrick, do you guys want to go out with us after this? Get a couple drinks.

Anna looks at Patrick who shrugs.

ANNA

Why not. Could be fun.

Patrick puts his hand on Anna’s shoulder.

INT. THE SANDBAR - LATER

Anna, Patrick, Zac, and Katie sit at a table and silently sip their drinks.

KATIE

Okay, so first thing’s first. Wedding colors. Zac’s favorite color is blue and mine is pink and that just will not do. It’ll look like we’re announcing a pregnancy. I cannot have that at my wedding!

Anna shoots her drink.

ANNA

Patrick, will you get me another?

He nods and motions for a waiter.

ANNA

Well, do you have to use your favorite colors? When is the wedding?

KATIE

I want a fall wedding.

ZAC

That’s fine by me.

A waiter brings another drink to Anna.

ANNA

I’ve always loved fall weddings.

Anna shoots another drink.

ANNA

So maybe a nice deep red or a golden yellow?

KATIE

That’s a great idea! You’re good at this.

Anna looks down. Patrick slings an arm around her shoulders. Zac stares at Anna. Katie just keeps talking. She’s clearly in her element.

KATIE

I need a cigarette. Anyone want to join?

The rest shake their heads no. Katie walks out of the bar.

ZAC

I’m gonna have to get her home soon. She doesn’t usually last past three drinks and a cigarette.

ANNA

Zac, I’m really glad you’re happy. But isn’t this a little quick?

Zac is enraged.

ZAC

Quick? So you can just fall in love with my brother at the drop of a hat but I can’t find someone who makes me happy?

ANNA

Well, I didn’t introduce Patrick to the family by proposing to him. I’m just saying that I don’t rush stuff.

ZAC

I’m not rushing anything! We want to be together, okay?

Anna shakes her head.

ANNA

You always just do the first thing that comes to mind. It’s okay to slow down!

Katie comes back to the table and Zac stands in a huff.

ZAC

Hey, hon, ready to go?

KATIE

Go? No way! We haven’t even done karaoke yet!

ZAC

Karaoke? I don’t know if that’s such a good idea...

Katie pulls him by the arm toward the booth.

KATIE

Come on, it’ll be fun!

Patrick and Anna stand up.

PATRICK

I can’t sing.

ANNA

No one can sing well in karaoke.

PATRICK

No, like, I can’t sing at all.

ANNA

Oh, that’s not true. Let’s do it!

Patrick SIGHS and downs the rest of his drink. They join Katie and Zac near the

STAGE

KATIE

You guys should sing, too!

PATRICK

I don’t know. I--

ANNA

Only if you and Zac sing!

Katie grabs Zac’s arm.

KATIE

Oh, we’re totally doing a duet. What could be more romantic!

Zac looks at Anna and then at Katie. They’re interrupted by the MC/DJ when the sound system booms in their ears.

MC/DJ

Sorry about that. Next up we have Zac and Katie!

Katie pulls Zac to the stage. She’s all peppy and excited and Zac lamely waves to the crowd of strangers.

They sing Elton John and Kiki Dee’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”.

Patrick and Anna drink while watching them.

PATRICK

That looks scary.

Katie is so off-key.

ANNA

Only if you can’t sing.

PATRICK

I told you I can’t!

ANNA

I won’t believe it until I see it.

Patrick shakes his head and takes another drink.

The song ends and Katie and Zac rush to Patrick and Anna.

KATIE

Oh my god, that was so fun! You guys have to do one now.

PATRICK

I really don’t want to.

Anna chugs the rest of her drink.

ANNA

I’m ready.

She storms the stage and takes the microphone. The music starts and she raps along. It’s The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy”. This could go either really well or really badly.

ANNA

(rapping)

Yeah, this album is dedicated to all the teachers that told me I’d never amount to nothin’.

Anna raps well for a little while but she’s so drunk she stumbles over her words.

ZAC

Oh shit, she usually knows this song by heart.

PATRICK

She’s had a lot to drink.

Anna painfully misses another phrase. She can’t find her place in the song. Everything is going to shit.

Zac looks around as the crowd loses interest. Anna fails miserably and looks like she’s about to cry. Zac looks to Katie. Oblivious.

He shoves his drink into Patrick’s hands and jumps up on the stage. Zac grabs the microphone and holds it so they both can use it.

ZAC

(rapping)

Remember Rappin’ Duke? Duh-ha, duh-ha. You never thought that hip-hop would take it this far.

Zac keeps going. Anna looks dazed but catches up.

ANNA

(rapping)

Peace to Ron G., Brucie B, Kid Capri. Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starski. I’m blowing up like you thought I would.

ZAC

(rapping)

Call the crib, same number, same hood.

ANNA

(rapping)

It’s all good.

ZAC

(rapping)

It’s all good.

ANNA

(rapping)

And if you don’t know, now you know.

ZAC

(rapping)

And if you don’t know, now you know.

They perform the song without missing another word. The crowd cheers. Zac looks into Anna’s eyes. She’s relieved. He’s nostalgic. This is invigorating.

ZAC

Just like old times.

Anna smiles.

They climb down the stage and go back to Patrick and Katie. Anna leaps into Patrick’s open arms.

PATRICK

You did great!

Zac slings an arm around Katie’s waist.

KATIE

You did a nice thing, babe.

ANNA

(to Zac)

Thanks for saving me up there. I don’t know what came over me.

ZAC

Maybe a little too much gin.

They all laugh. Patrick and Anna are still embracing but Zac can’t stop looking at Anna.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT, BATHROOM - LATER

Anna is hunched over the toilet and Becca sits on the rim of the tub holding Anna’s hair back. Anna vomits.

BECCA

Big night, huh?

Anna hugs the toilet.

ANNA

I let her get to me.

BECCA

What did Katie do?

ANNA

She’s just so happy and planning her perfect wedding, my perfect wedding. I couldn’t take it.

BECCA

Maybe you shouldn’t go out with them anymore.

Anna vomits again.

ANNA

Why won’t he love me?

BECCA

Who, sweetie?

ANNA

Zac. He doesn’t love me.

BECCA

What about Patrick?

Anna smiles weakly and she lays on the toilet.

ANNA

He doesn’t love me either, though. Nobody loves me.

BECCA

Aww girl, I love you.

Anna vomits again.

BECCA

Maybe not at this exact moment.

INT. ZAC'S APARTMENT - DAY

Zac and Katie sit on his couch. Zac is immersed in a video game. He offers Katie a controller but she declines.

KATIE

So this is how you like to spend your time?

ZAC

I’ve told you about the bar I’m trying to open.

KATIE

Oh, right. The one with the Nintendo Dreamstations or whatever.

ZAC

Super Nintendo and Sega Dreamcast. They’re different things.

KATIE

Whatever.

Zac continues playing the game. Katie looks bored.

KATIE

How much longer are you gonna do this?

ZAC

I’m almost done with this quest.

Katie SIGHS and twirls her hair. Zac looks at her briefly and frowns.

INT. PATRICK'S CAR - DAY

Patrick drives and holds Anna’s hand. She’s buzzing with excitement.

ANNA

Where are you taking me?

PATRICK

It’s a surprise. Geez! We’re almost there.

They laugh and smile. The electricity is potent.

Soon, they pull through the arch of a cemetery.

ANNA

Why are we here?

Patrick stops the car near a row of gravestones.

ANNA

This is where my dad is buried.

PATRICK

I thought it would be nice to plant some flowers for him and have a picnic here.

ANNA

This is the secret date?

Patrick gets out of the car and Anna follows.

EXT. CEMETERY - MOMENTS LATER

Patrick pulls two spades and some flowers from the trunk of his car.

PATRICK

Is this alright?

ANNA

I just...no one but my mom has ever come here with me before. Not since the funeral.

PATRICK

Wait, nobody?

ANNA

Nobody.

PATRICK

Well, I’m happy to be here with you.

He hands Anna a spade. They go to her dad’s gravestone. It reads: “DOMINIC R. ANGELILI - HUSBAND AND FATHER - 1963-1997”

Patrick gets down in the dirt and starts shoveling. Anna kneels beside him. They plant flowers without talking.

When they’re done, they sit back on their knees and admire their work.

ANNA

I like the pop of color. Mom will, too.

PATRICK

I think it looks good.

Anna looks at him and smiles. She hugs him.

ANNA

Thanks for this.

Patrick hugs her close. After a moment, he rises. Patrick goes to his car and comes back with a blanket and two sack lunches. He hands one to Anna.

PATRICK

Hope you like tuna fish.

Anna makes a face.

ANNA

You’ll never want to kiss me again.

Anna nudges his shoulder with hers and they laugh.

She opens her bag to find a hamburger and fries. Patrick lifts his out, too.

PATRICK

But just in case...

They laugh and Anna lightly punches his arm. They eat.

PATRICK

I can’t believe nobody ever came here with you.

ANNA

I guess graveyards freak a lot of people out.

(beat)

I’m glad it’s you here with me.

Patrick leans over and kisses her. Anna kisses him again but this time there’s no mistaking it, she’s not pretending anymore.

ANNA

This is my favorite date ever.

PATRICK

Ever ever?

ANNA

Ever ever.

PATRICK

Pretty weird favorite date.

ANNA

It was your idea!

She playfully smacks him. He laughs.

PATRICK

Well, weird or not, I’m glad it made you happy.

She kisses him.

ANNA

You make me so happy.

Anna cuddles into Patrick. They sit like that for a while.

INT. RANDOM APARTMENT - NIGHT

It’s a party! The apartment is relatively packed and music from an iPod BLARES. Patrick and Anna make their way through the crowd. They come upon Dylan.

DYLAN

Hey man!

Patrick and Dylan greet each other. Patrick puts an arm around Anna’s waist. Anna smiles.

PATRICK

This is my girlfriend, Anna. Anna, this is my friend, Dylan. We work at the radio station together on the Drive Home show.

Anna and Dylan shake hands.

ANNA

Nice to meet you.

(beat)

I’m gonna get some air. I’ll be right back.

Anna walks away. When she’s out of sight, Dylan punches Patrick’s arm.

DYLAN

Hey man, congrats! You gonna hold on to this one longer than a couple months?

PATRICK

Ha, as many months as she’ll let me.

DYLAN

Well, look at you!

Patrick looks after Anna.

PATRICK

Yeah, I think I’m in this one for the long haul.

INT. PATRICK'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Anna and Patrick walk in the door. Anna goes right for the couch and plops down. Patrick puts his keys away in the kitchen area.

PATRICK

Do you want popcorn or anything?

ANNA

I’m okay. What should we play?

Patrick sits down next to her and throws an arm around her shoulders.

PATRICK

What are you in the mood for?

ANNA

Something easy.

PATRICK

Easy for me or easy for you?

Anna pokes his ribs.

ANNA

Easy for me. I want to win tonight.

PATRICK

Oh, honey, I’d let you win at whatever you wanted tonight.

ANNA

Let me win!

PATRICK

Like usual.

Anna smacks him with a throw pillow.

ANNA

I win fair and square.

PATRICK

At everything but Mario Kart.

(beat)

Let’s play that.

Patrick gets the game set up and hands her a controller.

They play the game for a couple rounds. Anna throws her hands up in the air.

ANNA

I win!

PATRICK

(laughing)

Told you.

Anna snuggles into him.

ANNA

You sure you didn’t just let me win?

Patrick kisses the top of her head.

PATRICK

I wouldn’t dare test you when you’re this spicy.

Anna flips around so she’s straddling him.

ANNA

You think I’m spicy right now?

She kisses him.

PATRICK

Oh definitely.

She kisses his Adam’s apple. Patrick gulps. He kisses her back.

PATRICK

Maybe a lot spicy.

They begin to make out. Anna looks Patrick up and down. Patrick returns the look.

Anna jumps off Patrick and drags him to his feet. They fervently make out. She jumps up and wraps her legs around his waist, never breaking the kiss.

They move to Patrick’s

BEDROOM

And he sets her down on his bed.

Anna works on removing Patrick’s shirt. It gets stuck on his face. He makes a SILLY SOUND and they LAUGH. Anna stands on the bed to become tall enough to remove it.

Once discarded, she runs her hands over Patrick’s chest and stomach. Patrick kisses her. Then Anna takes off her shirt.

PATRICK

Well, hello there.

Anna pulls him to her. They make out and keep discarding clothes. Soon they’re naked and making love.

INT. PATRICK'S APARTMENT, BEDROOM - MORNING

Sunlight streams through the blinds. Anna wakes and finds herself facing Patrick, tangled in each other’s arms. She runs her fingers through his hair.

ANNA

Good morning, sleepyhead.

Patrick slowly opens his eyes.

PATRICK

I had the best dream ever.

ANNA

It wasn’t a dream.

PATRICK

Thank god.

He kisses her nose and she giggles.

PATRICK

Do you want breakfast? I make a mean omelette.

ANNA

That sounds great.

Patrick gets out of bed. Anna smacks his ass and LAUGHS. He sticks out his tongue and pulls on a pair of boxer briefs.

Patrick boyishly smirks at Anna and leaves the bedroom. Once he’s gone, Anna picks up her phone from the nightstand. There’s one voicemail. She listens.

VOICEMAIL (V.O.)

Hey Anna, it’s Zac. Listen, you were right about me and Katie. So I broke up with her. I can’t marry her because I’m still in love with you.

Anna is shocked. She lets the phone slowly fall from her hand onto the bed.

PATRICK (O.S.)

What do you want in your omelette?

ANNA

Uhh, I...hold on, I’m coming!

She scrambles out of bed.

INT. TIPSY BEAN CAFE - DAY

Zac and Anna sit at a table. The cafe is reasonably busy. Anna sips her drink.

ZAC

Thanks for meeting with me.

Anna is silent. She won’t look at him. Zac takes her hands in his.

ZAC

Anna, it was a mistake to break up with you. We’ve been together our whole lives and I threw that away. Will you give me a second chance?

Anna finally looks at him. Her features are soft.

ANNA

That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

Zac perks up.

ANNA

But I don’t know if I can.

ZAC

I know I’ve broken your trust and I will spend the rest of my life trying to regain it, if that’s what it takes. But let’s be us again.

ANNA

What about Patrick?

ZAC

He’ll get over it, eventually. He’ll understand that you and I are meant to be together.

Anna takes her hands back and sips at her drink.

ANNA

He’s been there for me at some of my lowest moments.

ZAC

And I caused that, I know. You have to forgive me.

ANNA

I have forgiven you, Zac.

They stare into each other’s eyes. Gradually, they move closer together. It looks like they’re going to kiss. Oh shit, they are! Just as their lips meet...Anna backs away.

ANNA

Zac, I don’t know. I’m going out with Patrick tonight.

ZAC

Ditch him! Anna, we have so much history. We belong together.

ANNA

Just...give me some time.

Katie sits in a corner covered in a scarf and oversized sunglasses. She takes the sunglasses off and GASPS.

INT. RESTAURANT - EVENING

Patrick and Anna sit at a table in the middle of the restaurant. The ambiance is subdued and intimate.

Patrick reaches his hand across the table for Anna’s. They both notice that he doesn’t knock over any drinks this time and smile. God, they’re so happy.

ANNA

Patrick, thank you for tonight. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.

PATRICK

I love you.

Anna’s eyes go wide.

ANNA

Patrick. I care about you a lot.

Patrick releases her hand and sits back.

PATRICK

But.

ANNA

But this is just brand new for me. I’ve only ever told Zac I love him and look how that ended. I want to be sure before I say it again.

Patrick SIGHS and slumps.

PATRICK

Everything always comes back to Zac.

ANNA

I just need some time.

PATRICK

(a little agitated)

How much more time do you need?

Katie bursts into the restaurant, looks around, and marches to their table.

PATRICK

What the hell.

ANNA

Katie?

KATIE

Patrick, you can’t date her. Zac is in love with her.

Patrick rubs his face with his hand.

PATRICK

Zac broke up with her. Anna and I are together now. You all have to accept that.

KATIE

No, you need to accept the fact that Anna is still in love with him. She’s just pretending to be in love with you to get him back.

Patrick abruptly stands up.

PATRICK

Leave my girlfriend alone.

Katie stares down Patrick and then Anna.

KATIE

Ask her! Go ahead and ask her if she still loves Zac. Ask!

Anna looks frantic. Her eyes dart between the two.

PATRICK

Anna, are you?

ANNA

I...I...I don’t know.

PATRICK

You don’t know if you want to be with me? After we slept together?

Anna pushes Katie.

ANNA

Why are you doing this?

Katie pushes her back.

KATIE

Because he broke up with me because he’s still in love with you.

The RESTAURANT MANAGER comes to their table.

RESTAURANT MANAGER

I’m going to have to ask you all to leave.

KATIE

(to Anna)

You were just trying to make Zac jealous, weren’t you. You never wanted Patrick.

PATRICK

What the fuck are you talking about?

KATIE

Anna only started dating you to get back Zac.

Patrick looks at Anna who has gone completely pale.

ANNA

Katie, why are you doing this?

KATIE

I can’t let you hurt someone else.

ANNA

I’m with Patrick. I was only trying to move on.

KATIE

Bullshit. You wanted Zac back. I saw you two in the coffee shop.

Poor Patrick is so confused.

PATRICK

What happened in the coffee shop?

ANNA

Nothing. We were just being nostalgic.

KATIE

You kissed Zac!

PATRICK

Anna, is it true?

Anna cries.

ANNA

In the beginning, I only wanted to see you because I thought it would make Zac jealous.

Patrick throws down his napkin. Anna desperately reaches for his hand.

KATIE

I told you!

ANNA

But that changed! I think I fell in love with you.

Patrick bats her hands away. He’s grim.

PATRICK

So I was just a game to you?

ANNA

No! Everything I said, everything I did was true. You have to believe me.

PATRICK

I can’t believe you’d do this to me.

Anna sobs now.

ANNA

You have to believe me. I never wanted to hurt you.

Patrick is frigid.

PATRICK

I need to go.

ANNA

But Patrick, I--

PATRICK

I said I need to go.

Patrick and Katie leave. Anna sobs alone at the table.

INT. ZAC’S APARTMENT - DAY

There’s a POUNDING at the door. Zac comes out of his bedroom to answer it. Patrick is there and shoves Zac further inside the apartment.

ZAC

What the hell, man?

PATRICK

What the fuck are you doing with Anna?

ZAC

Currently? Nothing. I thought she went out with you last night.

PATRICK

Apparently, I’m not the only one she saw yesterday.

ZAC

Yeah, we met up for coffee but that was it.

PATRICK

Bullshit! I know. I know you two kissed and want each other back.

ZAC

How do you know that?

PATRICK

Katie came to the restaurant and said she saw you.

ZAC

Katie! That bitch.

PATRICK

Don’t “that bitch” her. She’s the only one being truthful. So what the fuck is going on with you and Anna?

ZAC

I don’t know! She said she needed time.

PATRICK

You fucking sleep with her and she needs time.

ZAC

She slept with you?

PATRICK

You’re not the only one who’s been in love with her his whole life!

Zac SIGHS.

ZAC

Look, man, I’m sorry. I don’t know what to tell you.

PATRICK

Fuck you. Stay out of my life.

Patrick leaves the apartment and slams the door.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna wears gym shorts and an oversized t-shirt. She looks a mess. Clearly, she hasn’t showered in days. Old makeup streaks down her face.

She has a pint of ice cream in her lap on the couch. Anna watches the romcom she and Patrick watched the night they made love. She sobs. This is pathetic.

Becca walks into the living room. Anna reluctantly looks to her.

ANNA

Hi.

BECCA

Anna, are you okay?

ANNA

Of course, I’m okay. I’m definitely dressed and eating well and not crying into ice cream.

Anna gestures to her body. Becca leaves and comes back with her own pint of ice cream. She sits on the couch.

BECCA

You look pathetic.

ANNA

(sarcastically)

Thanks.

BECCA

We should go out again. Plenty of other men in the sea besides the Conlon boys.

ANNA

But I don’t want anyone else.

BECCA

Well, which of them do you want?

ANNA

Does it matter?

BECCA

Of course, it does! You could try to win one of them back. Make amends.

ANNA

I don’t know. They both make me happy.

BECCA

You’d better figure it out quick before you miss your chance.

(beat)

By the way, happy birthday.

Anna makes a “whoo” motion with her index finger.

INT. WEGMANS - DAY

Anna, still a mess, pushes a cart around aimlessly. She’s going toward the frozen food section when she spots none other than Katie. Katie doesn’t look all that bubbly today.

Anna tries to avoid Katie and turns her cart around, but she runs into a display of pop cans and knocks them over. Pop sprays everywhere.

ANNA

Oh, shit.

Katie closes the frozen foods door and looks at Anna. Katie makes a face and drives her cart over to Anna, who tries to pick up the non-exploding cans and put them back. A worker with a mop meets them there.

Anna tries to move away but Katie blocks her with her cart. This goes on a few times before Anna gives up.

ANNA

What do you want, Katie?

KATIE

Zac broke up with me because of you.

Anna rubs her temple.

ANNA

I know. I’m sorry.

Katie puts her hands on her hips. Pop still sprays all over and around them.

ANNA

Can we move this to a different aisle?

She moves her cart but Katie blocks her again.

KATIE

You were right, you know. Zac was going too fast.

Anna tries to interject but Katie just keeps going.

KATIE

He was always talking about this video game bar he wants to open, too. I don’t even like video games.

Anna perks up.

ANNA

He still wants to open the video game bar?

KATIE

If I hear one more thing about the difference between a Nintendo and a Sega, I’m gonna scream.

Anna runs up to Katie and hugs her. Katie is taken aback but then pats Anna’s back. They’re so sticky.

ANNA

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

KATIE

I didn’t peg you for a gamer girl.

ANNA

I grew up around the boys.

Katie SIGHS.

KATIE

Of course, they were going to fall in love with you.

ANNA

We were going to open this bar and it’s going to have every iteration of Nintendo and Sega and Playstation you can think of.

Katie SCREAMS. Anna covers her ears.

ANNA

Right. Anyway, maybe I still have a chance.

KATIE

Of course, you do, with the right one. I’ve learned something important, too. I can’t date gamers. Uck.

INT. EMPTY BUSINESS SPACE - DAY

Zac looks around the bare restaurant. A worker comes over to him and hands him some papers. Zac signs them. A man in his 20s, TYLER, walks in and shakes hands with Zac.

ZAC

Tyler, I assume?

TYLER

That’s right.

ZAC

You’ll be the only bartender at first, but if all goes well, we’ll hire someone on to help you.

INT. I HEART THE 80S STORE - DAY

Anna rushes into the store and flies to the game console shelves. She searches through them but doesn’t find what she’s looking for.

She goes to the CASHIER at the front of the store.

CASHIER

Can I help you?

ANNA

Do you have any N64 systems in the back? The shelf was empty.

CASHIER

Sorry, miss, but we’re all out. I don’t know why, it’s definitely not the best retro gaming system. Now, if you’re interested in an Atari 2600, I could direct you to all the parts to build it.

Anna slams her fist down on the counter.

ANNA

Shit. No, thanks.

She rushes out of the store.

INT. MILLCREEK MALL - MOMENTS LATER

Anna whips out her phone and calls Becca.

ANNA

Becca! What am I going to do? I tried to buy an N64 for Zac but the store is all out.

INT. BECCA'S CAR - SAME

Becca swerves to avoid traffic. She lays on her horn.

INTERCUT - PHONE CALL

BECCA

Couldn’t you get him a different one?

ANNA

No! This one is his favorite.

BECCA

His parents don’t have their old one?

ANNA

It broke ages ago and Zac has been on the hunt ever since.

Becca thinks for a moment. Anna slumps onto a bench.

ANNA

Hello?

BECCA

I have an idea.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Anna sits on the couch with her laptop on her lap. She’s hunched over and staring at it intently.

ANNA

No, no, no, no, no. Don’t outbid me. Shit!

She throws the laptop onto the couch.

ANNA

(whiny)

Becca.

Becca jaunts into the room.

BECCA

Always a pleasure.

ANNA

I keep getting outbid on eBay. This is never going to work.

BECCA

I thought this might happen.

ANNA

Then why did you send me on a wild goose chase!

BECCA

Because you need to work for it.

Anna GROANS.

BECCA

You’ll never believe what I found at my parents’ house today.

ANNA

You didn’t.

BECCA

I did. And I cleared it with my brother.

ANNA

You’re a lifesaver!

BECCA

I’ve got it in my room.

INT. ZAC’S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY  - DAY

Anna stands outside Zac’s door and holds a wrapped package. She hesitates. Does she want to do this or not? Hard to tell.

Alright, Anna knocks on the door. Zac opens it. He looks bewildered.

ANNA

Hey, Zac.

ZAC

Anna.

ANNA

I brought this for you.

Anna hands Zac the package. He opens it. Zac lifts out the N64, his eyes wide and giddy.

ZAC

You found me a new one!

ANNA

Well, I mean, it’s used but yes.

Zac sets the console down in his apartment and hugs Anna.

ZAC

You remembered.

ANNA

Of course, I did. I want to open the bar with you.

ZAC

I love you.

He kisses Anna. As he deepens the kiss, Anna’s eyes go wide and she pushes him away.

ANNA

But I’m not in love with you anymore.

Zac SIGHS.

ZAC

Then...I mean, then what is this all about?

ANNA

I still want to do the video game bar with you, but I want to go back to the way things were, when we were friends.

Zac’s face turns pleading. He doesn’t want to accept this.

ZAC

Friends?

An elderly woman, MRS. MURPHY (70s, WASPy) walks by them and stops.

MRS. MURPHY

Zachary, is this the girl you used to live with?

ZAC

Yes, Mrs. Murphy, this is Anna.

Anna waves.

MRS. MURPHY

In my day, if you wanted to live together, you had to get married first. No wonder your relationship failed.

ZAC

(muttering)

She’s on her fourth husband. Guess she lived with all of them.

Anna laughs lightly and covers her mouth. Mrs. Murphy walks to her door.

ZAC

Thanks, Mrs. Murphy. Always good talking with you.

Anna tries not to laugh more.

ANNA

Zac, I will always love you but things are different now. You breaking up with me was the hardest thing but it’s also the best thing.

ZAC

Are you in love with him?

ANNA

Zac...

ZAC

You’re in love with Patrick, of all people?

ANNA

Of all people. He’s there for me, he gets me, he actually likes me!

ZAC

I like you, too! Anna, my love for you hasn’t changed.

Anna rubs her temple.

ANNA

But my love for you has.

Zac SIGHS.

ZAC

You’re really in love with my stupid brother.

ANNA

He never sat in my dad’s chair.

ZAC

Why are you telling me this?

ANNA

Because you’re the only one who can help me.

ZAC

Like hell I’m gonna help you.

ANNA

Zac, please. If you really love me...

Zac runs his hands down his face.

ZAC

Well, good luck. He won’t even talk to me.

She hugs him.

ANNA

I’m glad we’re friends.

He hugs her back.

INT. PATRICK’S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY - DAY

Anna tepidly knocks on Patrick’s door. Patrick opens it and is bewildered by the sight of Anna. His bewilderment quickly turns to animosity, though.

PATRICK

What are you doing here, Anna?

ANNA

I...I wanted to make things right.

Patrick leans against his doorframe and crosses his arms.

PATRICK

Make it right? You used me. It was never right in the first place.

ANNA

Yes, at first. And then I fell in love with you, for real.

Patrick SCOFFS.

ANNA

How can I make you believe me?

PATRICK

I think you should leave.

ANNA

Please, Patrick. Please, believe me. My heart is breaking.

PATRICK

Now you know how it feels.

Patrick slams the door.

INT. THE SANDBAR - NIGHT

Patrick sits alone at the bar and sips a beer. He scans the crowd for available women. Back at it, it seems. He spots a young woman and stands up.

Patrick passes by Zac who looks up at him forlornly.

ZAC

You know no woman here is the woman you really want.

Patrick looks at him disgustedly.

PATRICK

You’ve got five seconds to get out of my face.

ZAC

Anna came to see me.

PATRICK

Good for her, she got what she wanted. Now piss off.

ZAC

I tried to get her back.

PATRICK

Fuck you and fuck her. I don’t give a shit. You got what you wanted.

ZAC

Yeah? Then why am I here alone?

Zac turns back to his beer. Patrick sits down next to him.

ZAC

She didn’t want me. After all that, she rejected me.

PATRICK

God, she really is the worst.

ZAC

The absolute worst!

Patrick orders another beer. They toast and chug.

PATRICK

She’s so flighty.

ZAC

And gets crazy ideas.

They keep drinking.

PATRICK

And she thinks she lets you win in video games but really you’ve let her win.

ZAC

She beats me sometimes.

Patrick laughs.

PATRICK

Sucks to be you.

They drink more beer.

ZAC

I hate how she snuggles into your shoulder while watching a movie. I always get such a cramp.

PATRICK

You’re such a baby. That was one of the good parts, the best parts. How she fit perfectly.

(beat)

She’s such a bitch, though.

ZAC

Such a bitch.

PATRICK

She used me to get back at you.

ZAC

Didn’t work. She’s not in love with me anymore.

Patrick SCOFFS dramatically. The patron next to him gives him a look. Patrick backs off sheepishly.

PATRICK

She will always be in love with you.

A beautiful BLONDE WOMAN approaches them.

BLONDE WOMAN

What are you handsome fellows talking about?

ZAC

Our ex, alright. Our ex. We’re brothers, we like to share.

The blonde woman looks disgusted and walks away.

PATRICK

You idiot!

ZAC

I’m not an idiot!

PATRICK

She was trying to hit on us.

ZAC

So? No woman here is the one either of us really wants.

PATRICK

You got a lot of nerve talking about who I want.

ZAC

Oh, come off it. You’re still in love with Anna, too.

PATRICK

Am not!

ZAC

Are, too!

PATRICK

Am not!

They grab each other by the shirt collars and stand up. They look like they’re about to fight. The BARTENDER steps to them.

BARTENDER

I wouldn’t, if I were you two.

Zac and Patrick let go of each other gruffly and sit back down.

ZAC

You are still in love with her.

PATRICK

You are, too.

ZAC

But she wants you.

They side eye each other as they nurse their beers.

INT. RADIO STATION - DAY

Patrick is in the production control room, Justin is on air. Patrick looks grumpy in the corner of the room. Dylan looks at Patrick, concerned.

JUSTIN

Today’s topic is, what is the craziest thing you’ve done for love? We want to hear your stories!

They go to a break. Justin hits his intercom and talks to Patrick.

JUSTIN

Can’t wait to hear what some of these bozos come up with. I’ve never done anything crazy for love, have you, Patrick?

PATRICK

(grumbling)

Not crazy enough for this show.

INT. ANNA AND BECCA'S APARTMENT - DAY

Anna eats a bowl of cereal on the couch. Becca bursts into the apartment.

ANNA

Hey, Becca.

BECCA

Anna! Turn on the Drive Home right now.

Anna grabs her laptop and streams the radio show. She and Becca sit attentively on her couch.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

Alright, caller you’re on the air. What’s your name and what’s the craziest thing you’ve done for love?

BRAD (V.O.)

My name’s Brad and the craziest thing I’ve ever done for love is tattoo my girl’s name on my ass.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

How did that relationship work out?

BRAD (V.O.)

Uh, she broke up with me.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

Oooh! That’s rough. Thanks for sharing, Brad. Best of luck, I know tattoo removal can be a pain in the ass. Literally for you!

Becca claps her hands and turns to Anna.

BECCA

You have to call in.

ANNA

What? No. That’s embarrassing.

BECCA

That’s the point! You humiliated Patrick, now you have to humiliate yourself.

ANNA

I don’t know. He doesn’t believe me.

BECCA

So make him believe!

ANNA

And how exactly do I do that?

BECCA

I don’t know but you have to try!

(beat)

Let’s go. I’ll drive you to the station.

INT. BECCA’S CAR - DAY

Becca drives. Anna picks up her phone and dials the radio station. The Drive Home plays on the car stereo.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

Alright, caller you’re on the air. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for love?

GINA (V.O.)

My name’s Gina and the craziest thing I’ve done for love is move across the country.

Becca wails on the horn. They almost get sideswiped by a car in the other lane.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

And how did that relationship work out for you?

GINA (V.O.)

I got there a day early to surprise him and found him in bed with another woman. I shouted, “Did you tell her about your herpes?” as I stormed out.

Anna leans towards Becca.

ANNA

If I even get on the show, what am I going to say?

BECCA

Tell him why you’re in love with him.

ANNA

What if he doesn’t care?

BECCA

Then you’ll move on, just like last time.

Becca swerves in and out of traffic.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

Caller number 5, you’re on the air. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for love?

Anna jumps in her seat and points excitedly at her phone. Becca motions her on.

ANNA

(into phone)

Hi, I’m Anna, and the craziest thing I’ve done for love is date my ex-boyfriend’s brother to make him jealous.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

Whoa. Now that is crazy. How’d that work out for you?

ANNA

Terrible.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

No shit.

ANNA

See, the thing is, I screwed up.

JUSTIN (V.O.)

I’ll say you did.

ANNA

I fell in love with his brother.

INT. RADIO STATION -  SAME

Patrick perks up in the production control room.

INT. BECCA'S CAR - SAME

ANNA

Patrick, I know you’re listening. I’m so sorry. It was just a game to me in the beginning and I’m the biggest bitch in the world for it.

INT. RADIO STATION - SAME

Patrick bursts into the booth. He takes the microphone.

PATRICK

Damn right you are.

INT. BECCA'S CAR - SAME

Becca pulls into the radio station parking lot abruptly, jostling them around. Anna sprints out.

INT. RADIO STATION LOBBY  - MOMENTS LATER

Anna bounds through the lobby.

INT. RADIO STATION - MOMENTS LATER

Anna bursts through the door. Patrick and Justin look up at her. Dylan tries to stop her from entering the booth but she wriggles away.

ANNA

Listen to me, Patrick. I’m in love with you. You took me to my dad’s grave, the best date I’ve ever been on. I love how you pay for my food when I run out of cash and forget my debit card. Even when we were kids. You’ve always been there for me.

JUSTIN

Wow! What a declaration of love! And with our very own production manager. Patrick, what do you say to that?

Patrick wipes his face with his hand.

PATRICK

Anna...I don’t know what you want me to say.

JUSTIN

(to Patrick)

Sorry for making you do this on air.

PATRICK

It’s okay, no one’s listening anyway. They all listen to true crime podcasts now.

ANNA

I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, if you want. I will wear green every day just to make you happy. I will let you have control of the radio. I will even let you win in Bomberman.

PATRICK

Anna, I don’t know what to do with all of this...and you can’t “let me win” because I always beat you, anyway.

ANNA

Patrick, I was blind before. Throughout my life, you have always been the one to care for me and encourage me and be there for me.

Patrick SIGHS and takes her by the shoulders.

PATRICK

You’re a piece of work, you know that?

Anna smiles. She’s got an idea.

ANNA

Hey Justin, can you play a song?

He nods. She whispers to him. “Truly, Madly, Deeply” plays.

Patrick looks at Anna with awe.

PATRICK

Why this one?

ANNA

It’s the greatest love song ever, right?

He beams. They kiss.

INT. L33T VIDEO GAME BAR - EVENING

CLOSE ON

Patrick and Anna sit next to each other at the table. Zac sits across from them. Mr. and Mrs. Conlon and Mrs. Angelili sit at the table, too. Everyone chats happily.

MRS. ANGELILI

(to Patrick and Anna)

I still can’t believe it’s you two who are together.

Patrick squeezes Anna’s hand.

MRS. ANGELILI

I couldn’t see it when you two got together but now...

MRS. CONLON

Oh, I could. I could see Anna was in love with him right from the start.

Patrick and Anna share a knowing look.

MRS. ANGELILI

(to Mrs. Conlon)

We always knew some of our babies would end up together.

The women squeeze hands and smile. Old ladies, I tell you.

MRS. CONLON

Now, if only my Zachary would find a nice lady.

Zac sets down his fork.

ZAC

It’ll happen, it’ll happen. For once, I’m not in a rush.

He and Anna share a smile.

MR. CONLON

So, the bar is doing great.

Pull back and they’re actually at the bar! It is packed. The sounds of retro and new video games can be heard throughout. There are RPGs, racing games, sports games, simulation games, and adventure games of all types and all systems strewn throughout the bar.

ZAC

We’re gonna have to hire more staff.

MR. CONLON

That’s fantastic! You kids have done a great job.

ZAC

Worth every cent of that Behrend money.

ANNA

It wouldn’t have been possible without Patrick getting us some on air advertising time.

Patrick and Anna squeeze hands.

Later, Anna and Patrick sit on a couch at a TV and play Bomberman. They’re intense. Patrick throws down his controller and Anna waves hers in the air.

ANNA

Ha! Beat you!

PATRICK

I let you win.

ANNA

Like hell you did.

Patrick smiles cheekily.

PATRICK

I always let you win.

ANNA

You jerk.

She smiles and puts her hands on Patrick’s face before she kisses him. On her left hand is a huge rock.

Zac walks over to them.

ANNA

Hey, “brother” Zac.

Zac makes a face.

ZAC

Never call me that again.

She LAUGHS.

ANNA

Okay.

PATRICK

Zac, you wanna play winner of the next game?

ZAC

Nah, I’m helping Tyler tonight. We really need to hire another bartender.

The bar is in full swing. And everyone is happy.

FADE OUT.
