Post-Apocalyptic Book Cover Design

“Under No Sky” is a conceptual book cover design crafted for a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel. The visual narrative aims to reflect a barren, dystopian world where the sun no longer rises—and a lone path winds through forgotten terrain. The absence of sky is not only literal, but symbolic of hopelessness, loss, and survival.

The cover was intentionally developed in monochrome to intensify the stark, lifeless atmosphere of a world after collapse. The central motif—a cosmic eclipse—serves as both a mysterious astronomical phenomenon and a metaphor for concealed truths, destruction, and time frozen.

A secondary version in full color was also developed (shared below) during the design process. Though visually striking, the colored edition evoked a more cinematic feel. Ultimately, I chose the black & white version for its minimalist rawness and stronger emotional alignment with the story’s essence.

A futuristic, geometric typeface was chosen for both the author name and title, spaced generously to mirror the vastness and loneliness of the landscape. The warm glow in the text offers a sliver of contradiction—hope surviving against extinction.

The design began with a rough visual idea inspired by eclipse and planetary motion. I visualized a desert-like terrain below a darkened cosmos, with nothing above—literally “under no sky.” Balancing the negative space and glow effects without overpowering the silence was key. Several test versions led to refining light, grain, and atmospheric texture.

This project was an exploration of using minimal elements to portray depth and narrative. It challenged me to push emotional expression through lighting, scale, and restraint. The final cover conveys both isolation and intrigue—what lies ahead in a world no longer lit?​​​​​​​
