MallNav in-mall navigation application
Project Summary
The inspiration behind the app.
After visiting family during the holidays, we went into the mall to watch a movie, long story short we got lost many times, couldn’t find the cinema for a long time, and after we watched the movie, which by the way was great. When we decided to leave we didn't know which exit had an E-hailing safe pick-up point.
At that point, I had a thought “there should be an app for this inconvenience”, that is when the idea for MallNav was created.
Problem statement
User interviews and personal experience brought forth the following problems faced.
- Being lost in a big mall or an unfamiliar mall.
- Not knowing where you are parked.
- Not being rewarded as a loyal mall customer.
- Being required to carry cash or card to pay for tickets for parking/ being required to pay instantly on departure.
- No access to new malls to try, new spaces to be in while being ready to experience the outdoors after COVID-19.
- No certain number of mall visitors daily.
* Non of the users interviewed knew of any existence of another App that could solve these problems.
User Interviews
Random shoppers were asked to be interviewed by me in regards to the pain points and problems faced.
Two sets of questionnaires were built to target both visitors and Mall staff/ Management.
Questionnaire 1: Shoppers
- How well do you know your favorite mall?
- How often do you visit a new mall for the experience?
- Would you like to be rewarded to Shop at a specific mall or a specific shop is fine?
- Overall shopping experience
Questionnaire 2: Mall management/ Staff
- Do you know how many patrons visit on a single day?
- How often do you get complaints about people being lost or people not knowing where they park?
- Do you think rewarding patrons for visiting the mall would increase the visitor rate?
- How is the overall management experience?
Findings
Design Solutions
Based on the outcome of user interviews we discovered the following:
- Users would like an in the mall navigation app.
- Be rewarded for visiting their favorite malls.
- Be able to track their parking and pay cashless.
- Mall management wants to know how many shoppers have visited the mall.
- They want to reward shoppers so that they come back.
The Design would fix three major issues for Shoppers.
- Being lost - a map of the mall
- Ticket system/ payment system of tickets
- Getting rewarded for mall visits.
For management of malls.
- The exact number of visitors
- Review management
- Rewarding visitors

Conclusion;
Building this case study has really come to circle within the design thinking process, the users were heard, and the users were given a resolution that targets and gives solutions to all their cries for help.
Navigation        ✅ Rewards        ✅ Parking assistance    ✅
