Project Overview

A 25-second film in three acts. The hand assembles itself in flight against dark amber, is cut through in a run of greyscale MRI-style cross-sections, then catches, closes and opens in a bright studio. A 2D layer runs over the top as the machine reading itself: small readouts at the frame edges, headlines built from the project’s own icon set, and short hard glitches between sections.

Process

The hand began as a single mesh. I split it into 22 groups, added the internals (lead screws, tendons, eyelets, encoders, a palm circuit board) and rigged it so every shot is driven from one set of controls. The film was planned as 19 shots across nine scenes, each cut to a soundtrack that was finished first, so every landing, closing fist and cut sits on a sound cue.
For the graphics I built a small identity: a seven-colour palette, a wordmark, 24 icons and a set of layout rules. The on-screen text uses only real names and values from the rig, and the ASCII and glyph treatments are generated from the render passes of each shot.
Tools: Cinema 4D, Octane, After Effects, Ableton Live.

Outcome

A short film that moves from mechanism to gesture: a lead screw turning in the dark, a fist closing against its own tendons, and an open palm at the end.

HandOff ™ is a self-initiated spec film about a tendon-driven robot hand: taken apart, studied under load, and put back together.
