The Forgotten Letters of Aleppo – A Legacy for Future Generations
In the heart of Aleppo, hidden among the city’s winding streets, lie remnants of a forgotten visual era—handcrafted storefront signs from the 1950s and beyond. These unique Arabic letterforms, once integral to the city’s identity, are now fading under layers of dust and modernization, silently telling the story of a bygone era.
This project is a tribute to the lost artistry of Arabic typography in Syria. Through careful photography and meticulous vector reconstruction in Adobe Illustrator, we document and revive these vintage shopfronts, preserving their essence as detailed digital illustrations. Each piece reflects craftsmanship, identity, and cultural heritage—an art form that is slowly vanishing.
But this is more than just preservation; it is a visual archive for future generations. By bringing these designs back to life, we aim to ensure that this overlooked creative legacy finds its place in contemporary design, inspiring designers, historians, and typography enthusiasts to appreciate, learn from, and build upon it.
This is not just about the past—it’s about keeping the soul of Arabic lettering alive for the future, one forgotten sign at a time. We hope you enjoy the work...
