I was tasked with creating a clear, dependable icon for an internal Halliburton tool used by field agents working in remote locations. The objective was to develop a symbol for offline time-logging—something instantly recognizable, low-friction, and grounded in the analog tools crews already trust.
Analog timekeeping references that inspired the structure, silhouette, and interaction cues of the final time-logging icon design
The design process started with broad sketch exploration around clocks, calendars, punch cards, and log sheets. Vintage time-clock references helped anchor the concept in a form that felt durable and mechanical, mirroring the equipment common in the field. Through rounds of iteration, I refined the flip-digit display, the ticket slot, and the housing into a simplified, balanced mark that reads quickly under practical conditions.
Rough pencil sketches testing different ways to represent time logs: clocks, calendars, checklists, and gauges.
Elevating promising ideas into clearer icon candidates, experimenting with cropping, labels, and layout for readability.
The final icon combines that rugged inspiration with a modern, polished finish. Its strong silhouette and clear hierarchy make it easy to identify at a glance, even on small devices or in low-connectivity environments.
A polished flip-clock time punch icon with clear 08:00 digits and ticket slot, designed as a dependable visual anchor for time logging.
The result is a reliable visual anchor for a mission-critical workflow—helping teams record their hours confidently, anywhere their work takes them.
