Awareness of science

Science, in its broadest of the terms describes the way of working of things around us. Be it in health, space, electrical etc. But what does this topic of ours mean and what is it’s importance in our scope of this write-up? It is related to the progress that mankind has made over time that vast variety of information is available in a short span of time. To state that Earth was stable at a space and that the sun was moving around it, to later acknowledge it to be the opposite was, a progress, getting man nearer towards what was, to make him more aware.

This awareness, in many things gets applied and some could be existing even today. For superstitions to knowledge to improve the climate, environment, health, technology, such progress, or the approach to reach towards truth, is quintessential, but also natural for man. If man wouldn’t have been aware of ozone layer depleting, chlorofluorocarbons would not have been banned from use. It was knowledge about fossil fuels turning into carbon rich substances that gasoline was produced, as for energy, but the pollution caused by automobiles for the same requires similar awareness. There are many questions that haven’t got the scientific answers but theories, such as why do all the living things age and decay, what could have been the origin of water on Earth, what makes Earth the only living planet to date etc. There are many diseases that mankind has no cure of and are even life threatening in nature, like cancer that tops the list, however certain medications and therapies do exist and there has been but improvements over time. It is the improvement that could optimistically make progress for man and reduce the suffering in future. Practising one’s beliefs on religion , God, etc. are not wrong but if driven by fear or misinformation would make it as meaningless as the scientific knowledge used for more harm than good. As per philanthropic point of view it wouldn’t be wrong to assume that instead of capitalising on weapons of mass destruction by a nation, aiming to uplift the poor of the nation and propagate peace to other nations and ultimately the world, may ensure less wastage of energy and even more progressive use of the nation’s money. If education paves way for a happier and knowledgeable and aware world then, it should not be wrong to say that education is necessary for providing answers to the questions as stated above or the cure for the incurable (as of now) diseases. Though it may seem imaginative but unlike the gasoline used in the present if renewable energy and non polluting form of energy if used in this sector of automobiles in future would help the environment. A new development in technology is the artificial intelligence, that though was considered something to be frightened of in the past, now with strict supervision and regulation that it is helping mankind, as it used to be imagined that robots would help in work with humans has been happening however to develop it to an extent to help it in domestic chores and the like seems plausible with artificial intelligence however if these things replace jobs or generate newer opportunities lies with the choices and decisions made by man. During the 1840s, Ignaz Semmelweis’s demonstrating the importance of hand washing to tackle the childbed fever improved maternal mortality rates, during which it was believed that a woman had more chances of survival if given childbirth on the road instead of in hospitals, highlighting the importance of antiseptics that were not taken so seriously back then leading to awareness of preventable deaths. It is surprising to get a glimpse of human behaviour that there isn’t any scientific reason to base a day into 24 hours. It is fascinating to wonder that man nowadays can go unknown places using his phone unlike olden days when he might have had to keep a map and ask people!

So awareness in general gets applied to many things, for business, or even non-scientific subjects as well, so why is being scientifically aware important or what does it imply on a deeper level? Well, awareness and curiosity are but two things that makes man confident and even satisfy his sense of security. There are still many things man doesn’t know and keeps his eye on to know, like black holes, teleportation, time travel, immortality etc. The idea of being self-sufficing would vary from person to person on their individual perception, however science is something that relates to everything that happens in daily life and it is important even to know it’s relation, for example instead of cutting trees for money that happens unfortunately, one can learn to produce the materials needed without harming the environment, because by not doing so there would then neither be money or trees. Men consider pets, insects, plants, animals to be inferior but who knows they are closer to nature than man and understanding them would make man know the times of natural calamities or more useful information. It is even surprising to think that everything is connected, that what happens on ground and impact the skies and water on earth. It is not that technology and development has done only good, young children are not seen playing outdoors as much, mobile phones spoil eye sight on overuse, use of artificial intelligence is good, but people have this tendency to get quick answers, not doing hard work they are capable of doing. Unlike when internet didn’t exist, people nowadays have this ease of working online. There have been changes in the job markets over time as well. Long is now the time gone when man used to be afraid of the skies believing fear of rain for unhappiness of some spirits beyond reach, but there is definitely much more for man to do. Science is but one of those aspects. There are still people who aren’t aware of science...
