"Dancer in Green": Degas Trascription

This painting is a transcription of Degas' Dancers, Pink and Green and sheds light on the misogynistic origins of the Paris Opera Ballet. The contrast between the music box in the green background and the man in the black background represents the real-life contrast between the beautiful ballet performances and the usually ill-intentioned men who waited backstage, as well as the contrast between the concept of ballet as a delicate art form and the abuse that ballerinas faced.
Below are a few process photos. I experimented with colour and lineart as I attempted to recreate Degas' movement while still staying truthful to my personal art style. I also tested different compositions, playing with power dynamics, colour, and movement.
