During my last year of graduate school, my thesis for my MA in Publishing, consisted of developmentally editing, copy editing, delivering editorial letters, analyzing publishing market research, and logging communication between both the author, my advisor, and myself.

How it Started:

While many Publishing Masters students decide to create marketing strategies for their own writings, I wanted to explore and learn more about the editing experience. After finding a writer with an unpublished, unedited manuscript I got started.

The Goal:

The project had a yearlong timeline, which allowed for thorough review of the novel for editing. In total I provided three edits to the author, giving the author 3 months between edits to rewrite, revision, and return the manuscript to me.
Along with my edits on page, the author also received: • A character list- which identified each character's main plots, descriptions, etc. • A page-by-page Timeline, summarizing the important parts of each page in the novel, and marking the indecencies in both content and linear writing. • Grammar chart- a list of all correct spellings and definitions of misused words, characters names, and other major grammar issues that consistently popped up for the author.
The last deliverable was an editor's note which consisted of a multipage summary of all major issues, but also positive reinforcement and mentions notable places within the novel that the author can see improvement in.

The End:

The author is now querying to agents in hopes of publishing the novel.
