The biggest barrier to launching an AI startup just got smaller.
Until now, every AI SaaS founder faced the same problem: every prompt your users sent was a line on your OpenAI bill. More users meant more cost, before you'd earned a single dollar.
At DevDay on September 29, OpenAI expanded "Sign in with ChatGPT."
Eligible Plus and Pro subscribers can now log into supported third-party apps and run AI requests on the ChatGPT plan they already pay for.
No API key. No separate billing setup.
Why this matters for builders:
🔹 Your inference bill can shift to the user. Their requests draw from their own ChatGPT allowance, not your credit card.
🔹 Onboarding without friction. No "paste your API key here" step that loses non-technical users.
🔹 Margins that make sense. You charge for workflow, data, and outcomes, not for reselling tokens.
🔹 Users stay in control. They set per-app usage caps directly inside ChatGPT.
The shift is clear.
The winning AI products won't be the ones with the deepest pockets for model costs. They'll be the ones with the strongest domain expertise, the best workflows, and the clearest outcomes.
A few realities before you start building:
→ Plan usage applies to Plus and Pro users only, so free users still need a fallback.
→ At launch, plan usage covers open-source and selected apps. Paid or hosted apps must request access from OpenAI.
→ The model is now the commodity. Your workflow is the moat. A thin wrapper won't survive.
If you have deep knowledge in healthcare, legal, logistics, real estate, or any niche, this is the moment to turn that expertise into a product.
I'm already mapping out a few product ideas around this model.
What would you build if LLM cost was no longer your problem?
