Designing a 152 Icon Airport & Wayfinding Iconography System

Wayfinding design is one of the few areas where a single bad icon can genuinely ruin someone's day. Miss a gate. Walk past the restroom. Stand in the wrong taxi line for ten minutes. The goal with this project was simple: build an icon set clear enough that none of that happens, in any airport, in any language.

The Problem

Most airport icon sets online are either too sparse (a handful of generic symbols that don't cover real terminal needs) or too inconsistent (mixed stroke weights, mismatched perspectives, icons that clearly came from five different sources). Designers end up patching gaps with their own custom icons, which breaks the visual system the moment it's deployed.
The brief I set for myself was to cover an entire terminal experience end to end. Arrivals and departures. Security and customs. Restrooms, lounges, nursery rooms, pet relief areas. Ground transport: taxis, shuttles, light rail, passenger pickup. Accessibility symbols. Emergency signage. Even the smaller, easy to forget details like charging stations, lost and found, and smoking areas.

Building the System

Every icon was built on a shared pixel grid so the set reads as one consistent family rather than a collection of one-offs. That grid discipline matters more in wayfinding than almost any other icon use case, since these symbols often get scaled up to backlit signage, banners, and floor stands where any inconsistency in stroke width or visual weight becomes obvious fast.
A few design decisions shaped the whole set:
Bold, simple silhouettes. No fine detail that disappears at a distance or in low light.
Modular figures. The human figures, vehicles, and luggage icons were designed so they could combine into new icons, like the taxi stand symbol, without redrawing from scratch.
High contrast first. Every icon was stress tested on black, white, and saturated color backgrounds, since real signage rarely lives on a neutral surface.
Full directional coverage. A complete range of arrows covering every turn, merge, split, and U-turn a terminal map might need.
To validate the set, I mocked it up against actual photos of bus stops, terminal corridors, hanging banners, and street signage rather than just floating the icons on white. That step caught a handful of icons that read fine in isolation but lost clarity once dropped into a real, busy environment.

What's in the Set

The final set landed at 152 icons, including:
Arrivals, departures, gates, and check-in
Full directional arrow system covering every turn, merge, and split
Restrooms, lounges, nursery rooms, clinics
Ground transport (taxi, bus, shuttle, light rail, pickup/drop-off)
Accessibility, pet relief, and family facilities
Emergency exits, security, and safety signage
Dining, retail, and amenity icons
Everything is built in black and white as the base, but designed to hold up cleanly when recolored for any brand or signage system.
